The Dawn of Civilization

The Dawn of Civilization PDF Author: G. Maspero

Book Description
Excerpt from The Dawn of Civilization: Egypt and Chaldaea The spelling of ancient Egyptian proper names adopted by Professor Maspero will perhaps seem strange to many English readers. But it must be remembered that all our attempts to represent the pronunciation of ancient Egyptian words can be approximate only; we can never ascertain with certainty how they were actually sounded. All that can be done is to determine what pronunciation was assigned to them in the Greek period, and to work backwards from this, so far as it is possible, to more remote ages. This is what Professor Maspero has done, and it must be no slight satisfaction to him to find that on the whole his system of transliteration is confirmed by the cuneiform tablets of Tel el-amarna. The system, however, is unfamiliar to English eyes, and consequently, for the sake of the weaker brethren, the equivalents of the geographical and proper names he has used are given in the more usual spelling at the end of the work. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Egypt, Chaldea, Syria, Babylonia and Assyria, Vol. 1 Naturally, in progressive studies like those of Egyptology and Assyriology, a good many theories and conclusions must be tentative and provisional only. Discovery crowds so quickly on discovery, that the truth of to-day is Often apt to be modified or amplified by the truth of to-morrow. A single fresh fact may throw a wholly new and unexpected light upon the results we have already gained, and cause them to assume a somewhat changed aspect. But this is what must happen in all sciences in which there is a healthy growth, and archaeological science is no exception to the rule. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Egypt, Chaldea, Syria, Babylonia, and Assyria, in the Light of Recent Discovery The present volume contains an account of the most important additions which have been made to our knowl edge of the ancient history of Egypt and Western Asia during the few years which have elapsed since the pub lication of Prof. Maspero's Histoire Ancienne des Peu ples de z'orient Classique, and includes short descrip tions of the excavations from which these results have been obtained. It is in no sense a connected and con tinuous history of these countries, for that has already been written by Prof. Maspero, but is rather intended as an appendix or addendum to his work, briefly re capitulating and describing the discoveries made since its appearance. On this account we have followed a geographical rather than a chronological system of ar rangement, but at the same time the attempt has been made to suggest to the mind of the reader the historical sequence of events. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 The work here offered to the public, conceived and commenced in the year 1876, was designed to supply what seemed a crying need of English literature - viz., an account of Ancient Egypt, combining its antiquities with its history, addressed partly to the eye, and pre senting to the reader, within a reasonable compass, the chief points of Egyptian life - manners, customs, art, science, literature, religion - together with a tolerably full statement of the general course of historical events, whereof Egypt was the scene, from the foundation of the monarchy to the loss of independence. Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
