Book Description
"So, in short, Mr Ayris, you need to take it easy for a while," the doctor said to me. "Pneumonia is a very serious illness. For somebody of your age to have required almost three weeks in hospital, well, that is not something to be taken lightly..." Just about exactly a year later - the spring of 2017 to be precise - in forty-degree heat and one hundred percent humidity, I was walking an eleven-year-old jaguar through the Bolivian jungle, exhilarated, exonerated, exhausted and wowed up to the toppermost of the poppermost. This is the tale of how all that came to pass. It is a rhapsody. A Bolivian rhapsody. Whatever the hell that is...

Andean Journeys: a Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Bolivian Poetry
Author: Ronald Haladyna
Publisher: Trafford Publishing
ISBN: 1426996063
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 259
Book Description
Andean Journeys: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Bolivian Poetry is the fourth in a series of books that aspire to address a dearth of information in the English-speaking world about South American poetry of the past thirty years. The fourteen outstanding poets included here represent a diversity of themes, styles, and perspectives in one of South Americas more marginalized nations. All of them have published extensively, have been recognized through literary awards and inclusion in national and international anthologies, and continue writing and publishing today. For readers unfamiliar with Bolivia, the introduction provides a brief background of its geography, history, politics, economy, and society. This is followed by an ample selection of representative poems published previously in Spanish, with translations in English on facing pages. The book concludes with a brief biographical sketch of each poet and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources for readers wishing to pursue further reading or research. Contemporary Uruguayan Poetry: A Bilingual Anthology; Exotic Territory: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Paraguayan Poetry; and Volcanic Reflections: A Bilingual Anthology of Contemporary Ecuadorian Poetry are companion volumes that offer similar exposure to poetry that deserves to be better known in the English-speaking world.

Panpipes and Ponchos
Author: Fernando Rios
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN: 0190692278
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 297
Book Description
"For several decades now, the Andean conjunto has been the preeminent format for 'Andean folk music' groups in the major cities of the world. Easily identified through the musicians' colorful ponchos and indigenous-associated instruments such as the panpipe, these 4-6 member ensembles interpret the music of the Andes in a style that bears little resemblance to traditional indigenous music, notwithstanding the efforts of "world music" labels to market their recordings as if they accurately reproduce indigenous expressions. Developed mainly by criollo and mestizo musicians, the Andean conjunto tradition has taken root in many Latin American countries, from Argentina to Mexico, but it is only in Bolivia that mainstream society has long regarded ensembles in this mold as exemplars of national folkloric music. As this book reveals, Bolivia's adoption of the Andean conjunto as a national musical expression in the late 1960s represents the culmination of over four decades of local folkloric activities that at various points articulated with transnational artistic currents, especially those emanating from Argentina, Chile, France, Mexico, and Peru, as well as with Bolivian state initiatives and nation-building projects. By elucidating these connections through an examination of La Paz city's musical scene from the 1920s to 1960s, this book not only sheds light on the rise of a prominent manifestation of Bolivian national culture, but also also offers the first detailed historical study of the Bolivian folkloric music movement that documents how it developed in dialogue with Bolivian state projects and transnational artistic trends in this period"--
