Listening to Pre-adolescent and Adolescent Minority Girls

Listening to Pre-adolescent and Adolescent Minority Girls PDF Author: Sarah Watson Feldstein
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Body image in adolescence
Languages : en
Pages : 242

Book Description
Research in the field of eating disorders has tended to focus only on one population: the White, middle-upper class, young adult, college educated woman. However, there has been conflicting evidence concerning the presence of disordered eating and disordered body attitudes in other populations, such as minorities and pre-adolescent girls. In order to investigate the possible presence of disordered attitudes and eating in a young minority population, 34 Black American and SOutheast Asian girls from low socio-economic backgrounds, aged 7-16, were interviewed on the topics of body image, eating, and beauty. The results indicate that, in this population, there were no girls found to have pathological eating disorders. Yet, more importantly, possible routes for the prevention of the development of disordered eating attitudes are explored.

Body Image

Body Image PDF Author: Sarah Grogan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134754353
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 365

Book Description
Body Image: Understanding Body Dissatisfaction in Men, Women and Children presents a review of what is presently known and the results of some new research on body image. It compares the effects of gender, sexuality, social class, age and ethnicity on satisfaction with the way we look and suggests how these differences arise. Why, for instance, are heterosexual men much happier with their body images than women or gay men? Sarah Grogan discusses the effect of media presentation of the ideal body and other cultural influences. Surprisingly, despite the almost exclusive media preference for very young female bodies, she finds that older women are not less satisfied with their bodies than younger women. Written for readers from a variety of disciplines, this clear and eclectic book will make the ideal text for students from psychology, sociology, gender and media studies.

Book Description
Eating disorders: do they mark cultural transition? Eating disorders that were once viewed as exclusive to specific class and ethnic boundaries in western culture are now spreading worldwide. This issue is fully discussed in this groundbreaking volume. Eating Disorders and Cultures in Transition is written by an international group of authors to address the recent emergence of eating disorders in various areas of the world including countries in South America, Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. It offers an in-depth analysis of the existing socio-cultural model arguing for the need to extend both our theoretical understanding and clinical work to account properly for this global phenomenon. Eating disorders are seen as reflecting sweeping changes in the social and political status of women in the majority of societies that are now undergoing rapid cultural transition. This multidisciplinary, multinational volume reflects wide-ranging, intellectually stimulating and frequently provocative viewpoints. The Cambridge Handbook of the International Psychology of Women PDF Author: Fanny M. Cheung
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108602185
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1524

Book Description
There is a growing knowledge base in understanding the differences and similarities between women and men, as well as the diversities among women and sexualities. Although genetic and biological characteristics define human beings conventionally as women and men, their experiences are contextualized in multiple dimensions in terms of gender, sexuality, class, age, ethnicity, and other social dimensions. Beyond the biological and genetic basis of gender differences, gender intersects with culture and other social locations which affect the socialization and development of women across their life span. This handbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date resource to understand the intersectionality of gender differences, to dispel myths, and to examine gender-relevant as well as culturally relevant implications and appropriate interventions. Featuring a truly international mix of contributors, and incorporating cross-cultural research and comparative perspectives, this handbook will inform mainstream psychology of the international literature on the psychology of women and gender.
