Commun(icat)ing Bodies

Commun(icat)ing Bodies PDF Author: Alexander Darius Ornella
Publisher: Theologischer Verlag Zürich
ISBN: 3290220273
Category : Religion
Languages : de
Pages : 429

Book Description
As a basic medium of human interaction, the body is fundamental to socio-cultural communication systems, in particular the communication system «religion». Over time, religious traditions – in all their various cultural and historical forms and incarnations – have developed elaborated symbolic systems with the body at their center. This volume proposes to study these systems and the role that body plays in their organization through the perspective of the concept of body as a medium and by drawing on media and communication theory. The papers collected in this volume explore this perspective in relation to different religious traditions, historical periods and theoretical as well as theological themes. They also engage in specific theoretical frameworks in order to discuss the scope and limitations of thinking of the body as a medium in religious symbol systems. Topics covered range from ancient mythology to contemporary Parsi rituals to the boundaries between body and technology.

Shameful Bodies

Shameful Bodies PDF Author: Michelle Mary Lelwica
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1472594967
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 289

Book Description
What happens when your body doesn't look how it's supposed to look, or feel how it's supposed to feel, or do what it's supposed to do? Who or what defines the ideals behind these expectations? How can we challenge them and live more peacefully in our bodies? Shameful Bodies: Religion and the Culture of Physical Improvement explores these questions by examining how traditional religious narratives and modern philosophical assumptions come together in the construction and pursuit of a better body in contemporary western societies. Drawing on examples from popular culture such as self-help books, magazines, and advertisements, Michelle Mary Lelwica shows how these narratives and assumptions encourage us to go to war against our bodies-to fight fat, triumph over disability, conquer chronic pain and illness, and defy aging. Through an ethic of conquest and conformity, the culture of physical improvement trains us not only to believe that all bodily processes are under our control, but to feel ashamed about those parts of our flesh that refuse to comply with the cultural ideal. Lelwica argues that such shame is not a natural response to being fat, physically impaired, chronically sick, or old. Rather, body shame is a religiously and culturally conditioned reaction to a commercially-fabricated fantasy of physical perfection. While Shameful Bodies critiques the religious and cultural norms and narratives that perpetuate external and internalized judgment and aggression toward “shameful” bodies, it also engages the resources of religions, especially feminist theologies and Buddhist thought/practice, to construct a more affirming approach to health and healing-an approach that affirms the diversity, fragility, interdependence, and impermanence of embodied life.

Body Belief

Body Belief PDF Author: Aimee E. Raupp, MS, LAC
Publisher: Hay House, Inc
ISBN: 1401953921
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
Acupuncturist and herbalist Aimee Raupp, M.S., L.Ac., offers a holistic plan for healing from autoimmune disease through reconnection to yourself, renewal of your beliefs, and reawakening of your health. This book will guide you on a life-changing path to radically shift your health and love your body more. Raupp posits that the rampant rise in autoimmune illness is due to three co-existing factors: body disconnect (a loss of connection to the spiritual, emotional, and physical aspects of self, resulting in systemic body chaos), behavioral sabotage (where deep-rooted beliefs negatively dictate your behavior, which dictates your health), and environmental toxins (exposure to external disease-promoting elements). With warmth, sensitivity, and practicality, Raupp will help you to resurrect your full potential to happily and gracefully inhabit your body and mind. As you follow Raupp’s two-phase Body Belief diet and Body Belief lifestyle roadmap, your health will begin to thrive, both inside and out. Included are a diet plan, shopping lists, menus, meditations, mantras, and DIY and commercial suggestions for bath, beauty, and home products for self-care.
