Book Description
This report explores the potential for mitigating the impacts of climate change by improved management and protection of marine ecosystems and especially the vegetated coastal habitat, or blue carbon sinks. The objective of this report is to highlight the critical role of the oceans and ocean ecosystems in maintaining our climate and in assisting policy makers to mainstream an oceans agenda into national and international climate change initiatives. While emissions' reductions are currently at the centre of the climate change discussions, the critical role of the oceans and ocean ecosystems has been vastly overlooked.

Exploring a Low Carbon Development Path for Vietnam

Book Description
Bringing together a large set of data and building on two years of consultations in Vietnam with Government counterparts, research organizations, state-owned enterprises, the private sector, and the country's international development partners, Exploring a Low-Carbon Development Path for Vietnam shows that achieving low-carbon development in Vietnam is both beneficial and feasible. To do so, this book delineates immediate and concrete policy guidance for the Government's consideration to lower the country's greenhouse gas emission trajectory. Based on a thorough data modeling effort, this book brings to light new data to formulate two scenarios that analyze Vietnam's options up to the year 2030: a business-as-usual scenario and a low-carbon development scenario for the key carbon-emitting sectors of Vietnam. This book is unique in that it brings together and presents data on multiple sectors of Vietnam's economy, making this information available for future reference. The effort is the result of collaboration with the Government of Vietnam as part of the Vietnam Low Carbon Options Assessment technical assistance. By highlighting several economic opportunities and clarifying the issues at hand, this work constitutes a milestone in this complex debate and should help all stakeholders tasked with designing the policies and measures to address the attendant challenges.

The Growth of Carbon Markets in Asia

Book Description
This paper is designed to provide comprehensive details on the carbon markets across the major Asian economies and with specific attention to the Chinese carbon market. We particularly discuss the carbon markets across the major northeast (the People's Republic of China [PRC], Japan, and the Republic of Korea) Asian economies. Further, we empirically explore the interrelationship between the Shanghai and Shenzhen carbon emission markets, using an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model with daily high-frequency data from 3 January 2017 to 9 October 2018. The evidence from the analysis confirms unidirectional influence from the Shanghai carbon emission market on the Shenzhen carbon emission market. Our findings shed light on the carbon emission markets' policy formulation for the Chinese government to achieve sustainable economic growth and meet carbon reduction targets in the PRC. Finally, we provide numerous policy and practical implications for the Asian economies with respect to the issues of climate change policies.

Vietnam 2035

Vietnam 2035 PDF Author: World Bank Group;Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam

Book Description
Thirty years of Ä?ổi Má»›i (economic renovation) reforms have catapulted Vietnam from the ranks of the world’s poorest countries to one of its great development success stories. Critical ingredients have been visionary leaders, a sense of shared societal purpose, and a focus on the future. Starting in the late 1980s, these elements were successfully fused with the embrace of markets and the global economy. Economic growth since then has been rapid, stable, and inclusive, translating into strong welfare gains for the vast majority of the population. But three decades of success from reforms raises expectations for the future, as aptly captured in the Vietnamese constitution, which sets the goal of “a prosperous people and a strong, democratic, equitable, and civilized country.†? There is a firm aspiration that by 2035, Vietnam will be a modern and industrialized nation moving toward becoming a prosperous, creative, equitable, and democratic society. The Vietnam 2035 report, a joint undertaking of the Government of Vietnam and the World Bank Group, seeks to better comprehend the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. It shows that the country’s aspirations and the supporting policy and institutional agenda stand on three pillars: balancing economic prosperity with environmental sustainability; promoting equity and social inclusion to develop a harmonious middle- class society; and enhancing the capacity and accountability of the state to establish a rule of law state and a democratic society. Vietnam 2035 further argues that the rapid growth needed to achieve the bold aspirations will be sustained only if it stands on faster productivity growth and reflects the costs of environmental degradation. Productivity growth, in turn, will benefit from measures to enhance the competitiveness of domestic enterprises, scale up the benefits of urban agglomeration, and build national technological and innovative capacity. Maintaining the record on equity and social inclusion will require lifting marginalized groups and delivering services to an aging and urbanizing middle-class society. And to fulfill the country’s aspirations, the institutions of governance will need to become modern, transparent, and fully rooted in the rule of law.

Participatory Mangrove Management in a Changing Climate

Participatory Mangrove Management in a Changing Climate PDF Author: Rajarshi DasGupta
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 4431564810
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
This book outlines the performance and management of mangroves in the changing climatic scenario of the Asia-Pacific region and draws examples and lessons from the national and community-driven mangrove conservation programs of relevant countries including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan as well as the Pacific islands. By highlighting the major drawbacks that hinder effective mangrove conservation, the book contributes towards enhancing climate resilience of communities through proposition of corrective methods and ameliorative approaches of mangrove conservation. Mangroves play an important role in adapting to climate change and provide a plethora of ecosystem services that are fundamental to human survival. Yet these ecosystems are exceptionally prone to extinction due to increased human interventions and changes in environmental boundary conditions. Especially in the Asia-Pacific region, mangroves have dwindled at an exceptional high rate over the past three decades. As the threat of climate change hovers over millions of people in this region, particularly those who crowd the low-lying coastal areas, conservation/restoration of mangroves through appropriate policies and practices remain highly imperative. The primary target readers for this book are students and researchers in the fields of conservation and management of mangroves, especially from the developing tropical countries of the Asia-Pacific region. Other target groups comprise policy planners, practitioners, and NGO workers, who will be able to apply the collective knowledge from this work towards proactive mangrove conservation through effective mediation in local communities.
