Book Description
The first Sino-Japanese symposium on Coagulation, Fibrinolysis and Platelets, originating from the Hamamatsu symposium, held in early 1990, was held in Hanchow, Mainland China in October, 1990. During that meeting, Taipei was selected as the next meeting place. We took great pleasure in carrying out this noble endeavor and were honored to have Professor Stenflo, Professor Hedner from Sweden, Professor Aoki and many other distinguished scientists from Japan joining us on this Second Sino-Japanese symposium. Our only regret was that our friends from Mainland China did not attend. The topics covered during the 3-day symposium included areas of both basic and clinical research. The symposium has been an excellent opportunity for all the participants to exchange ideas and improve their expertise, and at the same time, to expand frontiers in the field of coagulation, fibrinolysis and platelets. The symposium was very successful both in terms of contributing greatly to raise the level of research and development in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis and in helping to promote international scientific cooperation and friendship. We would like to express our appreciation to the members of our organizing and scientific committee for their devotion to this project. We also wish to thank our National Science Council and Department of Health, and the Asia and Pacific Council for Science and Technology, as well as the many other sponsors for their financial support. Without them, this instructive and invaluable symposium and this proceedings would not have been possible.

The Circulating Platelet

The Circulating Platelet PDF Author: Shirley A. Johnson
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323144322
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 623

Book Description
The Circulating Platelet focuses on the biochemistry and physiology of platelets. Composed of contributions of authors, the compilation starts with the discussions on the origin, discovery, production, and life span of blood platelets. The discussions continue with the morphology of platelets. Concerns include peripheral, sol-gel, and organelle zones and the membrane systems. The book also looks at the energy metabolism of thrombocytes and highlights the presence of glycoproteins in blood platelets. These include polysaccharides, glucosaminoglycans, and glycoproteins. The text also discusses the properties, functions, and the physiological value of thrombosthenin. The compilation further discusses platelet aggregation and functions of platelets. Concerns include collection and processing of platelets; preparation of homogenates; and the agents that influence platelet aggregation. The role of platelets in blood clots and fibrinolysis is emphasized. The selection ends with discussions on the immunological reactions of platelets; the clinical diseases related to blood platelets; and blood transfusion and preservation. The text is vital for researchers interested in studying blood platelets.

Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis

Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis PDF Author: Beth H. Shaz
Publisher: Newnes
ISBN: 0123977886
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1015

Book Description
The second edition of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis continues to be the only "pocket-size" quick reference for pathology residents and transfusion medicine fellows. It covers all topics in blood banking, transfusion medicine, and clinical and laboratory based coagulation. Short, focused chapters, organized by multiple hierarchical headings, are supplemented with up to 10 suggested reading citations. This single reference covers essentially all the topics required to meet the goals and objectives of a major program in transfusion medicine and clinical coagulation. New chapters in the coagulation testing section reflect the development of new tests available and their incorporation into clinical practice. Coverage includes essential updates on the importance of new cellular therapies, peripheral blood and bone marrow hematopoietic progenitor cells, as well as cord blood banking and regenerative medicine. The authors also examine advances in the understanding of molecular testing and pathogen reduction in two separate quality control chapters (one for blood centers and one for hospitals). - Updated content covers new coagulation tests, cellular therapies, and quality control issues - Easy to use, with focused, well-defined chapters in a standardized format throughout - Offers quick "cross-reference" lists at the end of each chapter - Includes lists of common abbreviations and indexes that cross reference diagnostic, clinical and therapeutic commonalities

Blood Clotting Enzymology

Blood Clotting Enzymology PDF Author: Walter H. Seegers
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483225453
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 641

Book Description
Blood Clotting Enzymology covers the mechanisms of blood clotting and their role in thrombosis, hemostasis, and many associated ramifications. This book is composed of 12 chapters that consider the integration of knowledge on blood clotting enzymology with hemostasis physiology. The opening chapter deals with the enzymology of the sol-gel transformation was studied in terms of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, surface physics, immunology, biophysical mechanisms, structural architecture, vitamin K and its antagonists, and the rheology of the blood. The subsequent chapters review the biophysical properties and composition of active substance in blood coagulation, as well as the concepts of prothrombin activation. These topics are followed by discussions on the chemical and physicochemical properties of fibrinogen and fibrin; the application of immulogical methods to delineate important properties of plasma constituents; and the mechanisms of antithrombin activity. Other chapters tackle the importance of hirudin and cobra venom for certain experimental laboratory work in the study of the physiology of blood coagulation. The final chapters survey the role of platelets in hemostasis, bleeding disorders, and the chemistry and function of vitamin K in blood coagulation. This book will prove useful to hematologists, enzyme scientist, immunologists, and research workers who are interested in blood coagulation mechanisms.
