Book Description
This title records some of the recent advances that biostratigraphy has made in production and development geology. It serves to illustrate to non-biostratigraphers the potential applicability of biostratigraphic and related techniques, and to encourage biostratigraphers to further explore and evaluate this potential.

Application of Modern Stratigraphic Techniques

Application of Modern Stratigraphic Techniques PDF Author: Kenneth Ratcliffe
Publisher: SEPM Soc for Sed Geology
ISBN: 1565761995
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 247

Book Description
Much has been written and debated about the various methodologies applied to modern stratigraphic analysis and the ever increasing complexity of terminologies. However, there exist numerous stratigraphic techniques that are reliant upon precise, quantitative, reproducible data, rather than qualitative interpretive stratigraphic methodologies. Such stratigraphic techniques are applied in an entirely pragmatic non-biased manner within the petroleum industry to provide enhanced stratigraphic understanding of petroleum systems. The petroleum industry is a key driver behind the development of new stratigraphic techniques and a major provider of new stratigraphic data, which has resulted in several of these new techniques having been developed as a requirement to the industry. Furthermore, because techniques, such as isotope chemostratigraphy, elemental chemostratigraphy, magnetic susceptibility stratigraphy, numerical biostratigraphy and heavy mineral stratigraphy are based around precise, quantified and reproducible analytical data, they provide an independent means to test the more interpretive stratigraphic methodologies. This volume attempts an overview of stratigraphic methodologies, but largely focuses on data-generative stratigraphic techniques such as chemostratigraphy, magnetic susceptibility stratigraphy, numerical biostratigraphy and heavy mineral stratigraphy. Where appropriate, each paper discusses data generation methods including sample preparation and analytical methods as well outlining data interpretation methods. This is followed by case histories that demonstrate how those data are used to resolve stratigraphic problems, commonly using material derived from petroleum basins around the World.

Recent Developments in Applied Biostratigraphy

Recent Developments in Applied Biostratigraphy PDF Author: Alister James Powell
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862391871
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Three organizations devoted to micropalaeontology held a joint meeting in London in September 2002 to encourage the trans-Atlantic sharing of ideas and to develop an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to both the academic and industrial realms. The 13 papers here, a small selection of those presented, discuss such topics as morphostratigraphy a

Soft Computing and Intelligent Data Analysis in Oil Exploration

Soft Computing and Intelligent Data Analysis in Oil Exploration PDF Author: M. Nikravesh
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080541321
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 755

Book Description
This comprehensive book highlights soft computing and geostatistics applications in hydrocarbon exploration and production, combining practical and theoretical aspects. It spans a wide spectrum of applications in the oil industry, crossing many discipline boundaries such as geophysics, geology, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. It is complemented by several tutorial chapters on fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms and geostatistics to introduce these concepts to the uninitiated. The application areas include prediction of reservoir properties (porosity, sand thickness, lithology, fluid), seismic processing, seismic and bio stratigraphy, time lapse seismic and core analysis. There is a good balance between introducing soft computing and geostatistics methodologies that are not routinely used in the petroleum industry and various applications areas. The book can be used by many practitioners such as processing geophysicists, seismic interpreters, geologists, reservoir engineers, petrophysicist, geostatistians, asset mangers and technology application professionals. It will also be of interest to academics to assess the importance of, and contribute to, R&D efforts in relevant areas.

Applied Stratigraphy

Applied Stratigraphy PDF Author: Eduardo A.M. Koutsoukos
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9781402066832
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 510

Book Description
Stratigraphy has come to be indispensable to nearly all branches of the earth sciences, assisting such endeavors as charting the course of evolution, understanding ancient ecosystems, and furnishing data pivotal to finding strategic mineral resources. This book focuses on traditional and innovative stratigraphy techniques and how these can be used to reconstruct the geological history of sedimentary basins and in solving manifold geological problems and phenomena.

Landmarks in Foraminiferal Micropalaeontology

Landmarks in Foraminiferal Micropalaeontology PDF Author: A.J. Bowden
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862393714
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
TMS Special Publication 6. This TMS Special Publication comprises a collection of 23 papers with an international authorship reflecting on landmarks in the history and development of Foraminiferal micropalaeontology. The volume is prefaced by an introductory overview that provides a brief and selected historical setting, as well as the intended aims of the book. Selected developments in Foraminiferal studies from a global perspective are presented from the time of Alcide d'Orbigny and the founding of the Paris MNHN collections in the mid-nineteenth century to the use of foraminifera in industry, other museum collections, palaeoceanography and environmental studies, regional studies from the Southern Hemisphere and the rise and fall of significant research schools. The book concludes with a chapter on the modelling of foraminifera. Landmarks in Foraminiferal Micropalaeontology: History and Development will be of particular interest to micropalaeontologists, other Earth scientists, historians of science, museum curators and the general reader with an interest in science.

Key Issues in Petroleum Geology

Key Issues in Petroleum Geology PDF Author: F. John Gregory
Publisher: Geological Society of London
ISBN: 9781862392373
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 412

Book Description
This volume contains a compilation of 17 seminal papers, taken from various Geological Society Special Publications and the Journal of the Geological Society, on the use and application of stratigraphy in petroleum geology over the last 20 years. The volume focuses on case studies in fundamental stratigraphy, applied and integrated stratigraphy and alternative methods of stratigraphy. The book is introduced with an original scientific and historical review of the subject: all papers are set in context with both the benefits of the techniques and some of the short-comings highlighted. By compiling these papers, commercial stratigraphers John Gregory, Philip Copestake and Julian Pearce have created a volume intended for a wide readership. However, it is of particular relevance for the training of undergraduate students studying courses on petroleum geology, basin development and sequence stratigraphy as well as for all postgraduate students working in petroleum-related scientific fields. It is also intended as a volume of general use for geoscientists entering the petroleum industry, as well as current workers requiring an overview.
