Book Description
Excerpt from Biology and Medicine But while conceding to the fullest extent the practical bene fits which attend the separate cultivation of different depart mentsof biology, I would even more strongly emphasize the essential unity of the biological sciences. In essence these sciences constitute but one science, and the great service of the word biology in its present use is to embody this concep tion. The fundamental problems everywhere in biology are the same, the determination of the structure and the proper ties and. The laws controlling them of living matter. In what ever department knowledge be gained as to these fundamental questions, it is a contribution to all departments of biology. The expansion of our knowledge brings closer together all physical and natural sciences, physics with chemistry, and both with biology. It is of incalculable advantage that the surfaces of contact between the different branches of biological study should be kept clearly in view, and that knowledge gained by one should be made readily available for others. Hence it seems to me that the general plan of organization of these laboratories, providing as they do for Special develop ment in all proper directions of biological study, while retain ing the conception of biology as one science, is eminently wise. Book Description
Excerpt from Greek Biology and Medicine Many Readers will find in the pages of Doctor Taylor a revelation in the amazing advance made by Greek Biology and Medicine and in the extent of our indebtedness to Hippocrates, Aristotle and Galen. The subject is one not so well known as some other aspects of the Greek and Roman civilizations. We are apt to think of magic and superstition in the medical practice of the ancients, in spite of our Celsus and the oracular Pliny. The specialist may have followed the expositions of Sir William Osier, Dr. Charles Singer, Sir Clifford Allbutt and Dr. Arthur J. Brock, but this book is addressed to the layman. It is our hope that a wider and deeper interest will result in the achievements of those Greeks who laid the foundations, permanent and secure, for the sciences of Biology and Medicine. Book Description
Excerpt from Biology General and Medical The question astonished me, but the manner in which it was asked clearly intimated that it was a method of expressing his conviction that no one would do so. My friend is a. Distinguished educator, occupies an im portant chair in one of the most prominent American institutions, and should have known; but apparently did not. Time has shown him to have been mistaken. Stu dents were anxious for a writing that would connect the Botany and Zoology they had learned in college with the Anatomy and Physiology they were learning in the Med ical College, and those subjects with the world of living things in which they moved. I still am unable to answer the original question, who will read it? All that I can say, as the result of three editions completely exhausted, is that thousands are reading it, and for me that is enough to justify the long period spent in its preparation. Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1904 The characteristics of this ring may be briefly stated as fol lows: A few seconds after the urine has been carefully poured upon the acid, there forms, precisely on the line of junction, a grayish white ring about mm. High, resembling the albumin ring given by a faint trace of albumin, and gradually becoming more and more distinct, until, in some urines under conditions to be mentioned later, it presents the appearance of a heavy thick precipitate, the height of which increases continuously and renders the lower portion of the urine completely opaque. At this stage the color is somewhat different from that of a protein ring, in that it is more yellowish. Below the ring there is a greenish zone ex tending somewhat into the acid; above it, a reddish zone smaller than the former and more contracted. The white ring is seen best in daylight reflected from a dark background, the color rings are seen best if the test-tube is held against a white surface.
