Book Description
Excerpt from Biology and Control of Citrus Insects and Mites Earlier bulletins published by the University of California on citrus insects have been out of print for several-years, and the aim of the present publication is to replace in part those earlier bulletins, for which there has been a constant demand, as well as to bring the subject Of citrus-insect control in California up to date. Since many of the requests call for detailed information on the biology of the pests, and because such information is least available, it seems desirable to cover that phase of the subject as adequately, as the limited space in this publica tion will allow. The order of discussion of the pests is more or less in accordance with their classification as they occur in the animal kingdom, and not necessarily in accordance with their relative importance as pests of citrus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Book Description
Excerpt from Red Spiders and Mites of Citrus Trees Next to the scale insects, red spiders and mites are the most important pests of citrus trees in California. On account of their small size, and because the foliage and fruit of the tree are not conspicuously marred either by their presence or by the covering of sooty mold fungus, as is the case with some of the scale insects, the actual injury done by red spiders and mites is not always appreciated. _their distribution is very general over the citrus sections, and they may be found in some numbers at most any season of the year. So long as they do not become numer ous the injury they do is, not important and in such cases it is not good economy to apply treatment. Because of their more orless continual presence in scattering numbers some growers take red spiders as a mat ter of course, and fail to recognize their importance when they become abundant and do damage, or come to a realization of their injurious nature after most of the damage has been done and the spiders them selves begin to disappear, as they often do. While, therefore, the presence of spiders in scattering numbers should be the cause Of no par ticular concern, the presence of. Excessive numbers of spiders should be the cause of enough concern for the grower to start immediately to apply control measures. Dropping of the leaves and fruit is the ultimate result of red spider injury. But the cause should be checked long before this extreme effect is evident. Book Description
Excerpt from The Biological Control of Mealybugs Attacking Citrus Great difficulty has always been experienced in the attempt to control these insects on citrus trees. The ordinary methods of control for scale insects, fi.e., Spraying and fumigation, have uniformly failed to bring relief, even when applied at much greater strength than has been necessary to handle satisfactorily such pests as the black, red, and purple scales. Much experimental work has been carried out. By the United States Department of Agriculture, the Citrus Experiment Station, and the County Agricultural Commissioners, in the hope of discovering improved methods or more satisfactory insecticides for the purpose, but the resistance of these insects has been so great that it has seemed practically impossible to destroy them without seriously damaging the tree and fruit. The situation led entomologists to give consideration to radically different methods for the suppression of mealybugs, and out of this has come the biological method, the discussion of which is the pri mary object of this bulletin.
