As 1 review these pages, the last of them written in Summer 1978, some retrospec tive thoughts come to mind which put the whole business into better perspective for me and might aid the prospective reader in choosing how to approach this volume. The most conspicuous thought in my mind at present is the diversity of wholly independent explorations that came upon phase singularities, in one guise or another, during the past decade. My efforts to gather the published literature during the last phases of actually writing a whole book about them were almost equally divided between libraries of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Medicine, and Physics. A lot of what 1 call "gathering " was done somewhat in anticipation in the form of cönjecture, query, and prediction based on analogy between developments in different fields. The consequence throughout 1979 was that our long-suffering publisher re peatedly had to replace such material by citation of unexpected flurries of papers giving substantive demonstration. 1 trust that the authors of these many excellent reports, and especially of those I only found too late, will forgive the brevity of allusion I feIt compelled to observe in these substitutions. A residue of loose ends is largely collected in the index under "QUERIES. " It is c1ear to me already that the materials I began to gather several years ago represented only the first flickering of what turns out to be a substantial conflagration.

This authored monograph introduces a genuinely theoretical approach to biology. Starting point is the investigation of empirical biological scaling including their variability, which is found in the literature, e.g. allometric relationships, fractals, etc. The book then analyzes two different aspects of biological time: first, a supplementary temporal dimension to accommodate proper biological rhythms; secondly, the concepts of protension and retention as a means of local organization of time in living organisms. Moreover, the book investigates the role of symmetry in biology, in view of its ubiquitous importance in physics. In relation with the notion of extended critical transitions, the book proposes that organisms and their evolution can be characterized by continued symmetry changes, which accounts for the irreducibility of their historicity and variability. The authors also introduce the concept of anti-entropy as a measure for the potential of variability, being equally understood as alterations in symmetry. By this, the book provides a mathematical account of Gould's analysis of phenotypic complexity with respect to biological evolution. Excerpt from Biological Time The knowledge of physiological time is of obvious im portance because it leads to the understanding of its value. Long ago, Minot found that the younger an animal is, the more rapid is the rate of aging. From his experiments, it could be inferred that physiological time has a much greater velocity in youth than in old age. But we remained ignorant of the extent of those differences. Their numerical value has been determined by Lecomte du Nouy. The rate of tissue repair is five times slower at the age of sixty than at the age of ten. The significance of the time of a clock depends naturally on the characteristics of physiological time. When compared with physiological time, physical time loses its uniform value. Parents and children live in different temporal worlds. They are separated by a gap that often is too large to be bridged, even by illusions. Within the familial group, the individuals should not be separated by too great a temporal distance. It is, therefore, desirable for women to have chil dren as early in life as possible. Again, the knowledge of the characteristics of physiological time teaches us that, at the end of life, aging is very slow. From one year to another, the appearance of an old man in good health hardly changes. Any acceleration in the process of aging in a senescent in dividual signifies the incidence of a disease, which should be detected. It also becomes obvious that the value of a day is much greater for a child than for his parents and his teachers. The younger a child is, the richer his life in physio logical and psychical values. Such a fact should not be neglected by educators. Every moment of the existence of a child must be utilized for his formation. A clear realization of the enormous value of physical time for children would bring about a real progress in education and in the quality of individuals. The knowledge of physiological time is equivalent to the knowledge of life itself, because time can not be separated from life. This is the first of a two-volume work in the Annals series devoted to developmental psychology. The project was originally conceived in 1985 when Paul van Geert, who had just completed his Theory building in developmental psychology (North Holland, 1986), agreed to col laborate on anAnnals volume examining foundational issues pertaining to the concept of development. The project attracted considerable interest and, in view of the length of the resulting manuscript, a decision was made to publish it in two volumes. Fortunately, the contributors provided coherent perspectives on two relatively distinct developmen tal themes which served to facilitate our task of dividing their contribu tions into two volumes. The first volume deals with the foundations of developmental theory and methodology; the second volume -to appear as Volume 8 of the Annals -with theoretical issues in developmental psychology. In this first volume, the contributions by Willis Overton and Joachim Wohlwill were completed in 1988, those by Roger Dixon, Richard Lerner, and David Hultsch, and Paul van Geert in 1989. Commentaries followed quickly and replies to commentaries were completed in 1990. Paul van Geert provides a general framework within which the founda tional issues of development are discussed. He is especially concerned with the nature of transition models and the structure of time in developmental theory. The relationship between methods and framework, or theory, is the topic of Joachim Wohlwill's contribution.
