Book Description
Excerpt from Biography of the Bar of Orleans County, Vermont "Biography is history teaching by example. It is the basis of all historical structures. The chronicles of the nations are composed of the sayings and doings of their men and women. These make up the sum of history." Since the year 1800 a county court has been held in Orleans county, and persons year after year have been admitted to practice as attorneys in this court, have been admitted to its bar. A record of such admissions in most instances has been kept by the county clerk; but this number is small compared with those admitted elsewhere who have resided and practiced law here. Of this large number there was no correct record, and in a very few years the scattered links of history could not have been gathered up sufficient to have written the chronicles of the bar of Orleans county. Even now, with the most careful and diligent research, a few are lacking. The aim of the author has been to give a more or less extended biography of every lawyer in regular standing ever in this county; also a few pioneers of the profession, who in the early days made the bar of North-eastern Vermont famous. If in this I have not been entirely successful, it may be I have succeeded in collecting and preserving data which at some future day may serve as a nucleus for a history worthy of this bar. All facts and figures have been gathered from the most reliable sources, and writers secured who were possessed of an intimate and extensive knowledge of the life and character of their subjects. The earnest endeavor of all has been to fairly and faithfully represent the legal fraternity. I have been assisted in preparing the material for this volume by many of the profession and others, who have contributed articles and rendered efficient aid in other ways. I have also received valuable information from various historical and biographical works. To all these I have intended to give proper acknowledgment under individual biographies, but I desire here to tender them my sincere thanks for their very acceptable help. The Star That Set
Author: Samuel B. Hand
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 9780739106006
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 374
Book Description
For over a century, from 1854, the year the party was organized, until 1958, Vermonters never failed to elect Republicans to its state and national offices, and every four years they returned a slate of electors pledged to the Republican presidential nominee. The Vermont GOP was trumpeted as the star that never set in the Republican Party's political firmament, until the decline of family farms and the influx of Democrat-leaning urbanites in the 1960s and 1970s eroded the bedrock of Vermont's GOP base. Encompassing the years 1854 to 1974, Samuel Hand's superb historical study documents the rise and fall of Vermont republicanism, exploring the personalities and the religious, political, and social institutions that constituted the Vermont Republican Party. More than simply the authoritative telling of a remarkable century of hegemony for the Vermont GOP, The Star That Set is a compelling story of the waning importance of party in modern American political life.

When Bad Men Combine
Author: Shawn Francis Peters
Publisher: LSU Press
ISBN: 0807179620
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 376
Book Description
The Star Route scandal captured the nation’s attention for more than a decade, with newspapers throughout the United States characterizing it as an unprecedented case of Gilded Age graft. Shawn Francis Peters’s When Bad Men Combine provides a glimpse into this uniquely tumultuous period marked by brazen greed and duplicity. In the first book to offer a full recounting of the Star Route maelstrom, which roiled American politics during the 1870s and 1880s, Peters reveals how postal service corruption resulted in a remarkable legal case that featured jury bribery and document theft. When Bad Men Combine follows the saga to its culmination as two sensational criminal trials presented evidence implicating some of the most prominent men in America and, perhaps, led to the assassination of President James Garfield.
