Book Description
Excerpt from Biographical Sketch of Colonel Fremont During this survey General Jackson was President of the United States. It was not an uncommon thing for Old Hickory (as he was familiarly called by the people), on hearing of any meritorious deed performed by a young man, to offer him a commission in the army. The fame of Fremont had reached him; and the consequence was the tender of a commission to the young South Carolinian, which was accepted. This commission was in the corps of Topographical Engineers - a scientific corps, and that which holds the highest rank in the American army. Fremont justly considered it a great honour to be chosen to this arm of the service, the more so as the road to it usually lies through the Military College of 'vest Point. It was, then, a high tribute to his merits to be thus appointed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
“The most eloquent, understanding, and yet very candid biography of Frémont that has appeared to date”—Howard R. Lamar, Yale University The career of John Charles Frémont (1813–90) ties together the full breadth of American expansionism from its eighteenth-century origins through its culmination in the Gilded Age. Tom Chaffin's biography demonstrates Frémont's vital importance to the history of American empire, and illuminates his role in shattering long-held myths about the ecology and habitability of the American West. As the most celebrated American explorer and mapper of his time, Frémont stood at the center of the vast federal project of western exploration and conquest. His expeditions between 1838 and 1854 captured the public's imagination, inspired Americans to accept their nation's destiny as a vast continental empire, and earned him his enduring sobriquet, the Pathfinder. But Frémont was more than an explorer. Chaffin's dramatic narrative includes Frémont's varied experiences as an entrepreneur, abolitionist, Civil War general, husband to the remarkable Jessie Benton Frémont, two-time Republican presidential candidate, and Gilded Age aristocrat. This new paperback edition of Pathfinder features a new, additional, updated introduction by the author.

History as Rhetoric

History as Rhetoric PDF Author: Ronald H. Carpenter
Publisher:

Category : History

Pages : 368

Book Description
In the realm of the written word, Ronald Carpenter reserves a privileged place for historical writing. He contends that because of its assumed credibility, historical writing holds sway over the present attitudes and future actions of the general public and world leaders. Through extensive primary-source research into the public and private writings of such well-known and widely read American historians as Frederick Jackson Turner, Alfred Thayer Mahan, and Allan Nevins, Carpenter examines what happens to this inherently credible medium when rhetorical prowess helps shape the writing of history. He also evaluates the power that such discourse exercises on the public at large and on individuals empowered with making public policy. Carpenter explicates the roles of style and narrative in enabling the writers of history to persuade through "opinion leadership", a process whereby historical writing authoritatively corroborates what people have learned from other sources. Carpenter portrays several American historians as successful opinion leaders who, at pivotal points in time, persuaded readers with their discourse.
