In October, 1822, upon graduation from Ohio University, Lucius Bierce set out upon his "rambles" through the southern states. An observant, intelligent, and outspoken young man, he encountered manners quite different from those of his New England heritage. Most of the travelers of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries who visited the South tended to follow the seaboard or the route of the Mississippi but Bierce chose to go south from Ohio and his mode of travel was on foot.
