Plastics from Bacteria

Plastics from Bacteria PDF Author: George Guo-Qiang Chen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642032877
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 453

Book Description
Due to the possibility that petroleum supplies will be exhausted in the next decades to come, more and more attention has been paid to the production of bacterial pl- tics including polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), biopolyethylene (PE), poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT), and poly(p-phenylene) (PPP). These are well-studied polymers containing at least one monomer synthesized via bacterial transformation. Among them, PHA, PLA and PBS are well known for their biodegradability, whereas PE, PTT and PPP are probably less biodegradable or are less studied in terms of their biodegradability. Over the past years, their properties and appli- tions have been studied in detail and products have been developed. Physical and chemical modifications to reduce their cost or to improve their properties have been conducted. PHA is the only biopolyester family completely synthesized by biological means. They have been investigated by microbiologists, molecular biologists, b- chemists, chemical engineers, chemists, polymer experts, and medical researchers for many years. PHA applications as bioplastics, fine chemicals, implant biomate- als, medicines, and biofuels have been developed. Companies have been est- lished for or involved in PHA related R&D as well as large scale production. It has become clear that PHA and its related technologies form an industrial value chain in fermentation, materials, feeds, and energy to medical fields.

Databook of Biocides

Databook of Biocides PDF Author: Anna Wypych
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1927885043
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
Databook of Biocides contains critical data on the most important biocides in use today. The selection includes generic and commercial biocides, which are approved for use in the European Union and the US. Data on generic biocides come from numerous sources, and can be easily compared with manufacturer information on commercial biocides, which are also included. Physical properties are presented—including volatility, solubility, and concentration—as are health and safety considerations (such as flash point, autoignition temperature, risks of skin and eye irritation, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity) and first-aid guidance. Ecological properties are also emphasized, with data on biodegradation and acquatic toxicity. Particular emphasis is placed on usage considerations, including recommended material-biocide combinations, processing methods and dosages, and features and benefits for each biocide. The book also contains an introductory chapter in which general indicators of performance of biocides are discussed. - Presents practical information for use in the lab and the field, including recommended processing methods, recommended dosages, and potential substitutes - Emphasizes environmental, health, and safety properties to ensure safe deployment - Includes the most commonly used biocides in compliance with the latest regulations in the European Union, US, and worldwide - Covers the physical properties, ecological properties, and performance indicators of biocides

New Chemical Concepts for Utilization of Waste Plastics

New Chemical Concepts for Utilization of Waste Plastics PDF Author: M. E. Banks
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Plastic scrap
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
In June 1968, TRW Systems Group, under contract to the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare's Bureau of Solid Waste Management, undertook a project to investigate analytically the use of waste plastic materials for the production of high-volume process chemicals. The objectives of the analysis were as follows: to identify waste plastic/coreactant reaction products with potential commercial value; to identify waste plastic/air combustion products that are potential air pollutants; to conceive of and provide technical and economic evaluations for chemical processes utilizing waste plastics as raw materials; and to identify potential R & D programs leading to the development of commercially viable chemical processes.
