Development of a Food Web Model to Develop Sediment Target Levels for Selected Persistent Organic Pollutants in Burrard Inlet
Author: Diego C. E. Natale
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Environmental monitoring
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This study reports the development and testing of a computer simulation model of the fate of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Burrard Inlet. POPs are introduced into Burrard Inlet by a number of sources including both, point sources and non-point sources. Once introduced to the inlet, contaminants are subject to physical, chemical and biological processes that lead to dispersion and accumulation in different matrices of the marine environment. The main purpose of the model is to provide a comprehensive ecosystem-level assessment of the fate of contaminants in Burrard Inlet to characterize the relationship between concentrations of POPs in sediments and organisms of Burrard Inlet food-web. The results provided significant evidence of bioaccumulation of a PCB mixture in some key biological receptors in the food web and also include recommendations for the development of sediment target levels and loading for PCBs in support management decisions regarding POPs in Burrard Inlet.

Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309086256
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 433
Book Description
Bioavailability refers to the extent to which humans and ecological receptors are exposed to contaminants in soil or sediment. The concept of bioavailability has recently piqued the interest of the hazardous waste industry as an important consideration in deciding how much waste to clean up. The rationale is that if contaminants in soil and sediment are not bioavailable, then more contaminant mass can be left in place without creating additional risk. A new NRC report notes that the potential for the consideration of bioavailability to influence decision-making is greatest where certain chemical, environmental, and regulatory factors align. The current use of bioavailability in risk assessment and hazardous waste cleanup regulations is demystified, and acceptable tools and models for bioavailability assessment are discussed and ranked according to seven criteria. Finally, the intimate link between bioavailability and bioremediation is explored. The report concludes with suggestions for moving bioavailability forward in the regulatory arena for both soil and sediment cleanup.

Pages : 528
Book Description
Bioremediation is an eco-friendly, cost-effective and natural technology targeted to remove heavy metals, radionuclides, xenobiotic compounds, organic waste, pesticides etc. from contaminated sites or industrial discharges through biological means. Since this technology is used in in-situ conditions, it does not physically disturb the site unlike conventional methods i.e. chemical or mechanical methods.
