Dancing with Myself

Dancing with Myself PDF Author: Billy Idol
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1451628528
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
A Rolling Stone Top 10 Best Music Books of the Year “That’s what I’m talking about…Of all these memoirs, Dancing With Myself was the only one that stimulated my envy—made me want to be Billy Idol for five minutes….He’s a genuine romantic, writing in a kind of overheated journalese about his London punk rock roots…and then falling head over heels for America.” —James Parker, The New York Times Book Review In this highly original memoir—following Billy Idol from his childhood in England to his rise to fame at the height of the punk-pop revolution—the iconic superstar tells the real story behind the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll that he is so fabulously famous for, in his own utterly indelible voice. An early architect of punk rock’s sound, style, and fury, whose lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into pop’s mainstream as one of MTV’s first megastars, Billy Idol remains, to this day, a true rock ‘n’ roll icon. Now, in his New York Times bestselling autobiography, Dancing with Myself, Idol delivers an electric, “refreshingly honest” (Daily News, New York) account of his journey to fame—from his early days as front man of the pioneering UK punk band Generation X to the decadent life atop the dance-rock kingdom he ruled—delivered with the same in-your-face attitude and fire his fans have embraced for decades. Beyond adding his uniquely qualified perspective to the story of the evolution of rock, Idol is a brash, lively chronicler of his own career. A survivor’s tale at its heart, this sometimes chilling and always riveting account of one man’s creative drive joining forces with unbridled human desire is unmistakably literary in its character and brave in its sheer willingness to tell. With it, Billy Idol is destined to emerge as one of the great writers among his musical peers. “I am hopelessly divided between the dark and the good, the rebel and the saint, the sex maniac and the monk, the poet and the priest, the demagogue and the populist. Pen to paper, I’ve put it all down, every bit from the heart. I’m going on out a limb here, so watch my back.” —Billy Idol

Me, the Mob, and the Music

Me, the Mob, and the Music PDF Author: Tommy James
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439142645
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 251

Book Description
The sensational ’60s music memoir—part rock & roll fairytale, part mob epic—that “reads like a music-industry version of Goodfellas” (The Denver Post). Tommy James was the 60’s pop icon behind timeless hits like “Hanky Panky,” “Mony Mony,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “Crimson and Clover,” and more. These songs helped define the era, and they have been covered by artists ranging from Billy Idol to Tiffany to R.E.M. But just as compelling as the music itself is the life Tommy James lived while making it. In Me, the Mob, and the Music, James reveals his complex and sometimes terrifying relationship with Roulette Records and Morris Levy, the legendary Godfather of the music business. It is a fascinating portrait of this swaggering era of rock ‘n’ roll, when concerts were wild and the hits kept coming—while, just backstage, payola schemes and mafioso tactics were the norm.

Book Description
William Michael Albert Broad, born on 30th November 1955, Stanmore, Middlesex, England, UK, known professionally as Billy Idol, is a musician, singer, songwriter and actor, who first became famous during the mid. '70s, emerging from the London punk rock scene as a member of Generation X. Idol later embarked on a solo career, which led to international recognition, Billy becoming a leading artist during the MTV-driven "Second British Invasion" of the US. The name "Billy Idol" was inspired by a schoolteacher's description of him as "idle". Idol began his music career in late 1976, as a guitarist in the punk rock group Chelsea, which he soon left with his former bandmate Tony James, to form Generation X. With Billy as lead singer, the group were successful in the UK, releasing 3 albums on Chrysalis Records before disbanding. Idol moved to New York City in 1981 to pursue his solo career, in collaboration with guitarist Steve Stevens, his debut studio L.P., Billy Idol (1982), selling well. With music videos for singles "Dancing with Myself" and "White Wedding," Billy soon became a staple of then-newly established MTV. Idol's 2nd studio album, Rebel Yell (1983), sold even better, featuring hit singles "Rebel Yell" and "Eyes Without a Face", the L.P. being certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipment of two million copies in the US. Billy issued Whiplash Smile during 1986. Having had 3 UK top 10 singles, "Rebel Yell", "White Wedding" and "Mony Mony", Idol released a greatest hits album entitled Idol Songs: 11 of the Best (1988), which went platinum in the UK.
