Theory Beyond Structure and Agency

Theory Beyond Structure and Agency PDF Author: Jean-Sébastien Guy
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 303018983X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
This book offers a solution for the problem of structure and agency in sociological theory by developing a new pair of fundamental concepts: metric and nonmetric. Nonmetric forms, arising in a crowd made out of innumerable individuals, correspond to social groups that divide the many individuals in the crowd into insiders and outsiders. Metric forms correspond to congested zones like traffic jams on a highway: individuals are constantly entering and leaving these zones so that they continue to exist, even though the individuals passing through them change. Building from these concepts, we can understand “agency” as a requirement for group identity and group membership, thus associating it with nonmetric forms, and “structure” as a building-up effect following the accumulation of metric forms. This reveals the contradiction between structure and agency to be a case of forced perspective, leaving us victim to an optical illusion.

The Form of Structure, the Structure of Form

The Form of Structure, the Structure of Form PDF Author: Sabrina Bendjaballah
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027269483
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 387

Book Description
This volume brings together articles by some major figures in various linguistics domains — phonology, morphology and syntax — aiming at explaining the form of linguistic items by exploring the structures that underlie them. The book is divided in 5 parts: vowels, syllables, templates, syntax-morphology interface and Afro-Asiatic languages. Specific topics are the internal structure of vowels and its relation to harmony; the logic of recurrent vocalic patterns; syllabic prominence; the interaction of syllabic and templatic structure and segmental realization; the innateness of templates and paradigms; the limits of phonology; and various morpho-syntactic implications on phonological form. The volume renders homage to Jean Lowenstamm’s work, by underlining the importance of seeking structural and intermodular insight in the study of linguistic form.

Looking Beyond the Structure

Looking Beyond the Structure PDF Author: Dan Bucsescu
Publisher: Fairchild Books
ISBN: 1563677199
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
In Looking Beyond the Structure, architect Dan Bucsescu and philosopher Michael Eng record their conversations about the relationship of the built environment and other forms of design to the culture in which they are created. The authors exchange their interpretations of selected readings about design theory and invite the reader to join in the discussion. Questions following each chapter's reading stimulate critical thinking about the philosophies and theories of design, and additional assignments encourage students to express their critical thinking skills visually.

Beyond Form Finding: Structural and Formal Morphogenesis in Architectural Design

Beyond Form Finding: Structural and Formal Morphogenesis in Architectural Design PDF Author: Yashika Gulati
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Beyond Form Finding is an exploratory project focusing on structural resolution for geometric complexities. Geometric expression in architecture is often associated with purely visual aesthetics. By contrast, formal performance should be concerned with the relationship between form and the reasons that inform objects of their shape. Currently, performance in the field of structure, construction, economics, environment, material and other measureable influences are being used as instigators of form. This project is looking for opportunities that allows for this integration by exploring form and structure through parameterization. The proposed project is an investigation of how parametric systems can be a way of building design without sacrificing formal aesthetics. Lamella structures will serve as a structural type that has performative and geometric constraints.Problem : Using structure as an aesthetic application instead of its true purpose. Can logic in arbitrary forms be embedded in its structural resolution?

Beyond Archigram

Beyond Archigram PDF Author: Hadas A. Steiner
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134718152
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 469

Book Description
Beyond Archigram is the first study of the prehistory of digital representation to focus on the magazine Archigram, the magazine published in London irregularly between 1961 and 1970 and the name of the group that created it. Archigram is among the most significant phenomena to emerge in post-war architectural culture. The wired environments first advertised on its pages formulated an architectural vocabulary of metamorphosis and obsolescence that cross-pollinated industrial and digital technology at the same time as complex systems were becoming commercially available. Through archival, theoretical and visual analysis, Hadas Steiner explores the process through which this model was envisaged and disseminated within an international network of practitioners and shows how the assimilation of Archigram imagery set the course for the visual output of what are now commonplace tools in architectural practice. This book will provide a foundation for further inquiry into the integration of digital technology at every level of design.

The Nominal Structure in Slavic and Beyond

The Nominal Structure in Slavic and Beyond PDF Author: Lilia Schürcks
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 1614512795
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 496

Book Description
The contributions in this volume shed new light on the discussion of whether the DP hypothesis applies universally or not. The issue is prominent not only for Slavic languages. Drawing on evidence from many other languages, Greek, East Asian, and Basque among them, the book has important implications for answering fundamental questions about the nature of definiteness and quantification.

Samson Abramsky on Logic and Structure in Computer Science and Beyond

Samson Abramsky on Logic and Structure in Computer Science and Beyond PDF Author: Alessandra Palmigiano
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031241177
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 1149

Book Description
Samson Abramsky’s wide-ranging contributions to logical and structural aspects of Computer Science have had a major influence on the field. This book is a rich collection of papers, inspired by and extending Abramsky’s work. It contains both survey material and new results, organised around six major themes: domains and duality, game semantics, contextuality and quantum computation, comonads and descriptive complexity, categorical and logical semantics, and probabilistic computation. These relate to different stages and aspects of Abramsky’s work, reflecting its exceptionally broad scope and his ability to illuminate and unify diverse topics. Chapters in the volume include a review of his entire body of work, spanning from philosophical aspects to logic, programming language theory, quantum theory, economics and psychology, and relating it to a theory of unification of sciences using dual adjunctions. The section on game semantics shows how Abramsky’s work has led to a powerful new paradigm for the semantics of computation. The work on contextuality and categorical quantum mechanics has been highly influential, and provides the foundation for increasingly widely used methods in quantum computing. The work on comonads and descriptive complexity is building bridges between currently disjoint research areas in computer science, relating Structure to Power. The volume also includes a scientific autobiography, and an overview of the contributions. The outstanding set of contributors to this volume, including both senior and early career academics, serve as testament to Samson Abramsky’s enduring influence. It will provide an invaluable and unique resource for both students and established researchers.
