Between Providence and Choice Biography

Between Providence and Choice Biography PDF Author: Kees Van der Knijff
Publisher: Summum Academic
ISBN: 9492701170
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 391

Book Description
Many Christians struggle with the topic of divine guidance. Yet, treatments of such guidance often do insufficient justice to the theological complexities underneath the practical questions. Therefore, in this book the author develops a Reformed approach to guidance using a systematic theological approach. First, he develops a typology of approaches to guidance in contemporary evangelicalism. This typology uncovers a number of underlying theological questions, which are discussed through extensive interactions with the writings of John Calvin and Jonathan Edwards. Based upon these interactions, the author proposes a Reformed approach to divine guidance in which vocation, wisdom, discernment, and transformation are central concepts. Furthermore, this approach to guidance emphasizes the importance of the Christian community and the ongoing influence of the Holy Spirit.

Greatness & Limits of Common Priesthood in 16th Century Reformation Theology

Greatness & Limits of Common Priesthood in 16th Century Reformation Theology PDF Author: Martijn Pouw
Publisher: Summum Academic
ISBN: 9492701227
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 227

Book Description
Luther affirmed, in the context of the 16th century, the radical equality of all believers by explicitly referring to the priesthood common to everyone. The priesthood of all believers became a fundamental principle and feature of the whole Protestant reformation movement. This study attempts to thoroughly grasp and re-think Luther's and Calvin's notions of common priesthood without the ministerial, to understand better and to shed light upon the necessary mutual relationship between both ministerial and common priesthoods as maintained in Roman Catholic doctrine.

Providence

Providence PDF Author: John Piper
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433568373
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
New from Best-Selling Author John Piper From Genesis to Revelation, the providence of God directs the entire course of redemptive history. Providence is "God's purposeful sovereignty." Its extent reaches down to the flight of electrons, up to the movements of galaxies, and into the heart of man. Its nature is wise and just and good. And its goal is the Christ-exalting glorification of God through the gladness of a redeemed people in a new world. Drawing on a lifetime of theological reflection, biblical study, and practical ministry, pastor and author John Piper leads us on a stunning tour of the sightings of God's providence—from Genesis to Revelation—to discover the allencompassing reality of God's purposeful sovereignty over all of creation and all of history. Piper invites us to experience the profound effects of knowing the God of all-pervasive providence: the intensifying of true worship, the solidifying of wavering conviction, the strengthening of embattled faith, the toughening of joyful courage, and the advance of God's mission in this world.

A Sweet and Bitter Providence

A Sweet and Bitter Providence PDF Author: John Piper
Publisher: Crossway
ISBN: 1433524341
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 162

Book Description
Sex. Race. Scripture. Sovereignty. The book of Ruth entails them all. So readers shouldn't be fooled by its age, says Pastor John Piper. Though its events happened over 3,000 years ago, the story holds astounding relevance for Christians in the twenty-first century. The sovereignty of God, the sexual nature of humanity, and the gospel of God's mercy for the undeserving-these massive realities never change. And since God is still sovereign, and we are male or female, and Jesus is alive and powerful, A Sweet and Bitter Providence bears a message for readers from all walks of life. But be warned, Piper tells his audience: This ancient love affair between Boaz and Ruth could be dangerous, inspiring all of us to great risks in the cause of love.

Providence and the Invention of American History

Providence and the Invention of American History PDF Author: Sarah Koenig
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300251009
Category : Oregon Territory
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
Sarah Koenig traces the rise and fall of Protestant missionary Marcus Whitman's legend, revealing two patterns in the development of American history. On the one hand is providential history, marked by the conviction that God is an active agent in human history and that historical work can reveal patterns of divine will. On the other hand is objective or scientific history, which arose initially in the pleas of Catholics and other racial and religious outsiders who resisted providentialists' pejorative descriptions of non-Protestants and nonwhites.
