Book Description
Set in New York City and New Jersey on the cusp of the financial crisis, Ghosts of Bergen County is a literary mystery with supernatural elements. Gil Ferko is a private-equity lieutenant who commutes to Manhattan from the New Jersey suburbs. His wife, Mary Beth, has become a shut-in since a hit-and-run accident killed their infant daughter. When Ferko reconnects with Jen Yoder, a former high school classmate, Jen introduces him to heroin. As his dependency on the drug grows, his downward spiral puts his life in danger and his career in jeopardy. Mary Beth has also found an escape—first in prescription drugs that numb her senses, then in the companionship of a mysterious girl who heightens them. A ghost? Mary Beth believes so. And Jen is also haunted. Years ago she witnessed a man she had just met fall from a rooftop. She walked away from the accident and has been haunted since by the question of why she did so. As her quest to rectify that mistake starts to collide with the mystery of the hit-and-run driver who killed Ferko and Mary Beth’s daughter, all of the characters are forced to face the fine line between fate and happenstance. Dana Cann’s debut novel is a tautly paced and intricately plotted story in which collective burdens manifest into hauntings.

Bergen County Voices from the American Revolution

Bergen County Voices from the American Revolution PDF Author: Todd W. Braisted
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1614237514
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
Bergen County saw much of the American Revolution from its own doorstep. Close to British-occupied New York City, this corner of New Jersey was divided by the Revolution. Some people were staunch Loyalists or Patriots, in disagreement with their families and neighbors; others wavered or remained neutral, while still others changed their minds as was expedient. In the end, the years of hostilities led to massive damage and upheaval within the community as men either left home or stayed nearby to fight for or against secession from Great Britain. After the war, their pension applications allow glimpses into their experiences. Compiled and edited by local historian and Revolutionary War expert Todd W. Braisted, these are the stories of the Revolutionary soldiers of Bergen County.

Bergen County, New Jersey Deed Records, 1689-1801

Bergen County, New Jersey Deed Records, 1689-1801 PDF Author: John David Davis

Pages : 412

Book Description
"In 1674, New Jersey was split into East Jersey and West Jersey by a boundary line extending straight north through the country from Little Egg Harbor to the 'utmost branch of the Delaware River.' By an Act of the Assembly of East Jersey in 1682, the province was divided into the four counties of Bergen, Essex, Middlesex and Monmouth." The recording of deeds began in the county seat, which was the village of Hackensack, in 1715 but the records did include some deeds from as far back as 1689. The author has written abstracts from the information contained in the Bergen County, New Jersey, Deed Books A through N, comprising records from 1689 to 1801. The original deed books have suffered extensive damage and the index of names has been lost thereby increasing the genealogical value of this particular work. While the handwritten deeds often run several pages, they usually repeat the vital information over and over again. Mr. Davis has consolidated the pertinent information into an informative and comprehensive abstract. Each entry contains, in order: the date of the transaction, the name of the grantor(s), the place of residence of the grantor(s), the name of the grantee(s), the place of residence of the grantee(s), price, the area of land involved, the location of the land, neighbors, chain of deed, other landmarks, signature of the grantor(s), signatures of the witnesses, and the signatures of others. The author has also included an every-name index for the ease of researching names.
