Corpus scriptorum christianorum orientalium

Corpus scriptorum christianorum orientalium PDF Author: Gerald M. Browne
Publisher: Peeters Publishers
ISBN: 9789068319255
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 102

Book Description
This volume comprises three appendices to the same author's Old Nubian Dictionary (CSCO 556, Subs. 90; 1996). The first deals with the emphatic particles -lo/-lo, -sin and -so/-so and provides for each a catalogue of examples followed by a commentary describing the usage. The second appendix, intended to facilitate the editing of damaged texts, is a reverse index of all the words entered in the Dictionary. The third furnishes addenda et corrigenda to M.M. Khalil's published Worterbuch der nubischen Sprache (Fadidja/Mahas-Dialekt) and supplements the cognates cited in the Dictionary. Like the Dictionary, this volume of appendices should be of interest to all who work in the area of Christian Africa. The author is Professor of the Classics and Linguistics in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) and is recognized as the world's leading authority on Old Nubian.

The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia

The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia PDF Author: Geoff Emberling
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0197521835
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1217

Book Description
The cultures of Nubia built the earliest cities, states, and empires of inner Africa, but they remain relatively poorly known outside their modern descendants and the community of archaeologists, historians, and art historians researching them. The earliest archaeological work in Nubia was motivated by the region's role as neighbor, trade partner, and enemy of ancient Egypt. Increasingly, however, ancient Nile-based Nubian cultures are recognized in their own right as the earliest complex societies in inner Africa. As agro-pastoral cultures, Nubian settlement, economy, political organization, and religious ideologies were often organized differently from those of the urban, bureaucratic, and predominantly agricultural states of Egypt and the ancient Near East. Nubian societies are thus of great interest in comparative study, and are also recognized for their broader impact on the histories of the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East. The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Nubia brings together chapters by an international group of scholars on a wide variety of topics that relate to the history and archaeology of the region. After important introductory chapters on the history of research in Nubia and on its climate and physical environment, the largest part of the volume focuses on the sequence of cultures that lead almost to the present day. Several cross-cutting themes are woven through these chapters, including essays on desert cultures and on Nubians in Egypt. Eleven final chapters synthesize subjects across all historical phases, including gender and the body, economy and trade, landscape archaeology, iron working, and stone quarrying.

The Kingdom of Kush

The Kingdom of Kush PDF Author: László Török
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004294015
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 660

Book Description
The individual character of Kingdom of Kush has often been overshadowed by the overwhelming cultural presence of its neighbour Egypt. This handbook in our series "Handbuch der Orientalistik/Handbook of Oriental Studies" for the first time presents a comprehensive survey of the rich textual, archaeological and art historical evidence for this Middle Nile Region Kingdom of Kush. Basing itself both on the evidence and scholarly literature, this work discusses the emergence of the native state of Kush (after the Pharaonic domination in the 11th century B.C.), the rule of the Kings of Kush in Egypt (c. 760-656) and the intellectual foundations and political history of the Kingdom in the Napatan (7th - 3rd centuries) and Meroitic (3rd century B.C. - 4th century A.D.) periods.

The Old Nubian Texts from Attiri

The Old Nubian Texts from Attiri PDF Author: Vincent W. J. van Gerven Oei
Publisher: punctum books
ISBN: 0998237574
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 106

Book Description
The Old Nubian Texts from Attiri is the first publication in the Dotawo: Monographs series. It presents heretofore unpublished material, an edition of a series of manuscripts discovered in the frame of the Aswan High Dam campaign at the site of Attiri, a rocky island in the Batn el-Hajjar region in the Sudan, and does so in an innovative way, through an intense collaboration of the editors under the name of the Attiri Collaborative. By bringing together their diverse backgrounds in linguistics, archeology, Bible studies, history, anthropology, and philology, the editors hope to have provided an example of a new model of collective manuscript editing and the results such collaboration can attain. The collection consists of 15 manuscript fragments that were all written in Old Nubian. Among these manuscripts special mention should be made of two parchment leaves from a codex dedicated to works on the Archangel Michael, a lectionary containing fragments from the Gospel of Matthew and the Second Letter to the Corinthians, as well as a rare letter written on a leather sheet.TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface - ixList of Tables - xiList of Figures - xGeneral Introduction - 13P. Handbook of Ancient Nubia

Handbook of Ancient Nubia PDF Author: Dietrich Raue
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110420651
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 1414

Book Description
