Behavioural and Network Impacts of Driver Information Systems

Behavioural and Network Impacts of Driver Information Systems PDF Author: Richard Emmerink
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351119729
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 321

Book Description
Originally published in 1999, this volume contains a systematic collection of both theoretical and applied studies on user information systems for road users. It is generally expected that reliable information offered to road users will improve the use of scarce capacity on transport networks but from a research perspective the question arises whether the provision of such hard and software will influence the behaviour of road users to such an extent that a more desirable traffic situation will emerge. The book contains European, American and Asian contributions and presents advances and findings in the field of theoretical, simulation and empricial models on driver information systems and behaviour, whilst also paying attention to the design of such systems.

Assessing the Benefits and Costs of ITS

Assessing the Benefits and Costs of ITS PDF Author: David Gillen
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1402078749
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 372

Book Description
The 17 chapters in this book, which evolved from a conference on measuring the contributions of ITS sponsored by the California Department of Transportation in February 2002, examine the costs and benefits of ITS in an economic and business policy context. Section 1 examines the broad theme of how and what ITS contributes to the economy and how one makes a business case for ITS. Section 2 includes three chapters on ITS applications in mass transit. Section 3 explores ITS applications in the automobile/highway system. Section 4 considers integrative issues including how ITS is perceived and how it can be positioned to improve surface transportation. This volume will be especially useful to researchers and policy makers working in transportation, transportation engineering, and the economic analysis of transportation systems.

Understanding the Decision-making Process for Drivers Faced with Lane Restriction Or Closures on Wisconsin Highways

Understanding the Decision-making Process for Drivers Faced with Lane Restriction Or Closures on Wisconsin Highways PDF Author: Laura Higgins
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Roads
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) owns and operates a state highway network of 12,000 miles, which carries approximately 80 percent of vehicle miles traveled in the state. Construction, maintenance, weather and other events often lead to lane closures or restrictions, causing inconvenience to road users. WisDOT developed numerous strategies for identifying alternate routes that drivers can use when highway travel times are affected by planned or unplanned events. Despite these efforts, WisDOT has observed that many alternate routes are underused, even when those routes would save travelers significant travel time. The objective of this project was to examine the decision-making processes of Wisconsin drivers regarding route selection, including their decisions to use (or not use) an alternate route instead of the highway network. Factors that were examined included how and when drivers make initial decisions about a preferred route, for both familiar and unfamiliar trips; the factors that influence their decisions to divert or not divert from their usual (or current) route to an alternate route; and the information sources they would most likely consult for travel and route information.
