Excerpt from Argentina's Livestock and Meat Industry Many ranchers vaccinate against the more common diseases, but it is a frequent compla that the vaccines available are not reliable. The government is now helping the veterinar industry to develop standards for foot-and-mouth disease vaccines. In the northern tick zom dipping is commonly practiced. One of Argentina's most hopeful government projects is the control of foot-and-mm disease. The disease is being combatted by quarantining infected areas and bringing these unc control by vaccination of all livestock within these areas. Argentina's cattle and beef industry is based on the productive pastures of the Pam Steers and heifers are put on special fattening pastures soon after weaning and kept there about 12 months until ready for market. Alfalfa pastures are the foundation of this syste although many animals are pastured on rye or other small grains during the winter. Fatten in feed lots, common in the United States, is not practiced. Except for purebred breeding anime Argentine cattle are not fed any grain except when occasionally turned into grain fields ti have failed to produce a crop worth harvesting.
