Book Description
This publication demonstrates Bedford County?s involvement in the American Revolutionary War. Bedford County was the ?mother? of present-day Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon and Somerset Counties. This book has a three-fold purpose. The first is to provide a history of the Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; The Blair County Chapter encompasses the region that includes Bedford, Blair, Fulton and Huntingdon Counties, Pennsylvania. In addition to the general history of the chapter, all members of the Blair County Chapter, past and present, are listed with genealogical information tracing their lineage back to all their proven Patriot ancestors. The second purpose is to provide a history of the Somerset-Cambria Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. As its name implies, the Somerset-Cambria Chapter includes those two counties. As in the case of the Blair County Chapter section, this section includes a general history of the chapter along with information on its members, past and present. This book will be of value to anyone with ancestors from this region who might be interested in joining the Sons of the American Revolution or Daughters of the American Revolution. Mother Bedford?contains the most extensive listing ever published of the Patriots? war service. Also included are references to the Hessians buried within the region. Written by Larry D. Smith who serves as the Historian for the Blair County Chapter and who has spent a number of years researching the subject of the American Revolutionary War, the third purpose of the volume is to provide the most complete and accurate history, to date, of Bedford County?s participation and role in the American Revolutionary War. The following items are included in the section title, A View of Bedford County, Pennsylvania during the American Revolutionary War:? Complete rosters of the various companies of Militia raised within Bedford County, including those which were raised in 1775-76 and later became part of the Continental Line.? A brief history of the establishment of the Militia and the Continental Line.? An explanation of the Battalion/Company numbering scheme used in the Bedford County Militia.? The most complete listing ever published of the Patriots who were buried in this six-county region, along with fully footnoted references to their war service. Bedford Goes to War

Bedford Goes to War PDF Author: James W. Morrison

Book Description
Bedford Goes to War is the compelling World War II story of Bedford County, Virginia--a story of heroism, sacrifice, and remembrance. From a population of 30,000, some 4,000 men and women served in the military. Some 50 fought in the Normandy Invasion, and 20 were killed in action on D-Day--19 in the 116th Infantry's Company A, which had been a National Guard unit in Bedford. The county is believed to have lost more men per capita on D-Day than any other community in America. As tragic as D-Day was for Bedford, its sacrifice throughout the war was far greater. Its men fought and died on the ground, in the air, and at sea in all major theaters. Over 140 were killed or died, many more were wounded, and over 20 were POWs. On the home front, citizens produced war material and food, prepared for civil defense, bought war bonds, contributed to the Red Cross and USO, restricted consumption, salvaged scarce materials, grew Victory Gardens, prepared surgical dressings for the military, and wrote to loved ones in the service. Bedford has honored and memorialized those who fought and died. It also proudly hosts the National D-Day Memorial. Bedford Goes to War tells what happened during the war in general to Bedford County--to those who served in the military and those who remained on the home front--and in specific detail to 35 veterans and their families. The book is based on extensive research in Bedford County's library, museum, and courthouse and interviews with over 30 veterans or their families. The book includes 367 pages of text, 30 pages of photos and maps, two appendices, a bibliography, and over 900 endnotes. Bedford Goes to War was nominated for the 2005 Library of Virginia Literary Awards, and from 60 nonfiction books nominated a panel selected it as one of five finalists for a Peoples Choice Award.

Book Description
Situated on American Revolutionary crossroads, the town of Bedford has always enjoyed a unique history. Blending serene beauty and rolling hills with a proximity to New York City, the town became home to men and women who treasured its distinctive qualities. The land was first shared by Americian Indians and settlers and then by patriots and loyalists. Pre- and post-Revolutionary days were dominated by agricultural pursuits, coupled with a role as the northern Westchester County seat. With the coming of the railroad in the late 1840s, new hamlets emerged, farmers moved farther north for cheaper land, and New York City families began purchasing large parcels for their summer residences. Environmentally sensitive zoning policies, guided by its people's love of country life, allowed the town to maintain a balance between home and business areas, keeping it a green oasis. The character of Bedford's town and its people was well described by founding father and prominent resident John Jay in 1812: "Perhaps no place can exhibit a larger proportion of orderly, industrious and well disposed citizens."
