Book Description
This book summarizes the experience of many years of teamwork with my group, the beam diagnostics group of GSI. For a long time the group was also responsible for operating the machines and application programming. In my opinion, this connection was very e?cient: ?rst, because a beam diagnostic system has to place powerful tools at the operators’ disposal; second, because data evaluation and presentation of results for machine operation demand application programs which can be handled not only by skilled experts. On the other hand, accelerator developments and improvements as well as commissioning of new machines by specialists require more complex measu- ments than those for routine machine operation. A modern beam diagnostic system, including the software tools, has to cover these demands, too. Therefore, this book should motivate physicists, constructors, electronic engineers, and computer experts to work together during the design and daily use of a beam diagnostic system. This book aims to give them ideas and tools for their work. I would not have been able to write this book without a good education in physics and many discussions with competent leaders, mentors, and c- leagues. After working about 40 years in teams on accelerators, there are so many people I have to thank that it is impossible to mention them all by name here.

Pages : 321

Book Description
Manufacturing with lasers is becoming increasingly important in modern industry. This is a unique, most comprehensive handbook of laser applications to all modern branches of industry. It includes, along with the theoretical background, updates of the most recent research results, practical issues and even the most complete company and product directory and supplier's list of industrial laser and system manufacturers. Such important applications of lasers in manufacturing as welding, cutting, drilling, heat treating, surface treatment, marking, engraving, etc. are addressed in detail, from the practical point of view. A list of specific companies dealing with manufacturing aspects with lasers is given.

Book Description
The ECR-PII injector beam line is operated at a fixed ion velocity. The platform high voltage is chosen so that all ions have a velocity of 0.0085c at the PII entrance. If a previous tune configuration for the linac is to be used, the beam arrival time must be matched to the previous tune as well. A nondestructive beam-phase pickup detector was developed and installed at the entrance to the PII linac. This device provides continuous phase and beam current information and allows quick optimization of the beam injected into PII. Bunches traverse a short tubular electrode thereby inducing displacement currents. These currents are brought outside the vacuum interface where a lumped inductance resonates electrode capacitance at one of the bunching harmonic frequencies. This configuration yields a basic sensitivity of a few hundred millivolts signal per microampere of beam current. Beam-induced radiofrequency signals are summed against an offset frequency generated by our master oscillator. The resulting kilohertz difference frequency conveys beam intensity and bunch phase information which is sent to separate processing channels. One channel utilizes a phase locked loop which stabilizes phase readings if beam is unstable. The other channel uses a linear full wave active rectifier circuit which converts kilohertz sine wave signal amplitude to a D.C. voltage representing beam current. A prototype set of electronics is now in use with the detector and we began to use the system in operation to set the arrival beam phase. A permanent version of the electronics system for the phase detector is now under construction. Additional nondestructive beam intensity and phase monitors at the {open_quotes}Booster{close_quotes} and {open_quotes}ATLAS{close_quotes} linac sections are planned as well as on some of the high-energy beam lines. Such a monitor will be particularly useful for FMA experiments where the primary beam hits one of the electric deflector plates.

Beam Diagnostics in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities

Beam Diagnostics in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities PDF Author: Pei Zhang
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3319007599
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
An energetic charged particle beam introduced to an rf cavity excites a wakefield therein. This wakefield can be decomposed into a series of higher order modes and multipoles, which for sufficiently small beam offsets are dominated by the dipole component. This work focuses on using these dipole modes to detect the beam position in third harmonic superconducting S-band cavities for light source applications. A rigorous examination of several means of analysing the beam position based on signals radiated to higher order modes ports is presented. Experimental results indicate a position resolution, based on this technique, of 20 microns over a complete module of 4 cavities. Methods are also indicated for improving the resolution and for applying this method to other cavity configurations. This work is distinguished by its clarity and potential for application to several other international facilities. The material is presented in a didactic style and is recommended both for students new to the field, and for scientists well-versed in the field of rf diagnostics.

Beam Diagnostics Based on Time-Domain Bunch-by-Bunch Data

Beam Diagnostics Based on Time-Domain Bunch-by-Bunch Data PDF Author:

Book Description
A bunch-by-bunch longitudinal feedback system has been used to control coupled-bunch longitudinal motion and study the behavior of the beam at ALS, SPEAR, PEP-II, and DAPHNE. Each of these machines presents unique challenges to feedback control of unstable motion and data analysis. Here the authors present techniques developed to adapt the feedback system to operating conditions at these accelerators. A diverse array of techniques has been developed to extract information on different aspects of beam behavior from the time-domain data captured by the feedback system. These include measurements of growth and damping rates of coupled-bunch modes, bunch-by-bunch current monitoring, measurements of bunch-by-bunch synchronous phases and longitudinal tunes, beam noise spectra. A technique is presented which uses the longitudinal feedback system to measure transverse growth and damping rates. Techniques are illustrated with data acquired at all of the four abovementioned machines.

Book Description
Construction of the SLAC Linear Collider has posed some new problems in beam diagnostic device design. Typical beam sizes are small when compared with conventional storage rings, orbit tolerances are tighter and the pulsed nature of the machine means that signal to noise enhancement by averaging is not always possible. Thus the diagnostics must have high resolution, high absolute accuracy and must deliver data from a single pulse. In practice the required performance level depends on the function and dynamics of a given region in the collider. This paper reviews the major beam diagnostic systems and then discusses the global data acquisition schemes. Each system is described only in a very cursory fashion.
