Thus, the negative mass instability, which grows about three times faster than the beam breakup instability for these parameters, is the dominant stability consideration. Probably, the negative mass instability can be controlled by sufficient spread in the electron energy.

We find that the total amplification of the beam breakup mode is limited to five e-findings provided that the cavity mode quality factor Q is 6. Thus, the negative mass instability, which grows several times faster, is the dominant consideration. However, we also find that they energy range over which the negative mass instability occurs can be narrowed substantially by reducing the guide field strength after the beam has been accelerated to about 12 MeV. This approach, coupled with beam thermal effects, not considerated here, probably is sufficient to limit negative mass growth to acceptable levels in tge racetrack accelerator. (Author).

Beam dynamics issues were assessed for a new linear induction electron accelerator. Special attention was paid to equilibrium beam transport, possible emittance growth, and beam stability. Especially problematic would be high-frequency beam instabilities that could blur individual radiographic source spots, low-frequency beam motion that could cause pulse-to-pulse spot displacement, and emittance growth that could enlarge the source spots. Beam physics issues were examined through theoretical analysis and computer simulations, including particle-in cell (PIC) codes. Beam instabilities investigated included beam breakup (BBU), image displacement, diocotron, parametric envelope, ion hose, and the resistive wall instability. Beam corkscrew motion and emittance growth from beam mismatch were also studied. It was concluded that a beam with radiographic quality equivalent to the present accelerators at Los Alamos will result if the same engineering standards and construction details are upheld.

A NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on High-Brightness Accelerators was held at the Atholl Palace Hotel, Pitlochry, Perthshire, Scotland, from July 13 through July 25, 1986. This publication is the Proceedings of the Institute. This ASI emphasized the basic physics and engineering of the rela tively new and fast-emerging field of high-brightness particle accelera tors. These machines are high- to very-high-current (amperes to hundreds of kiloamperes), modest-voltage (megavolt to tens of megavolts) devices, and as such are opposed to those historically used for high-energy physics studies (i.e., gigavolt and higher energies and rather low currents). The primary focus of the Institute was on the physics of the accelerator and the beam, including the dynamics, equilibria, and insta bilities of high-current beams near the space-charge limit; accelerator engineering techniques; and the applications of high-brightness beams in areas such as free-electron lasers, synchrotron-radiation sources, food processing, and heavy- and light-ion fusion. The Institute concentrated on bringing together several diverse but related communities which, we hope, benefited from this opportunity to interact: the North American activity in machine technology, engineer ing, and diagnostics with the strong European theoretical community; the basic beam physicists with the engineering technologists.

The transverse wake potential for a radial line terminated by a lumped impedance is derived analytically for arbitrary line width. Using these formulas, the wake potential is evaluated numerically for parameters relevant to high current, electron beam, induction accelerators. The transverse wake potential scales as the line width divided by the square of the drift tube radius for narrow lines, in agreement with earlier studies. However, the potential becomes roughly independent of line width and varies only with the reciprocal of the drift tube radius for widths somewhat greater than the radius. Several additional resonances arising for wide lines do complicate the scaling. Nonetheless, it appears that wide, high voltage radial lines may reduce beam breakup and image displacement instability growth significantly for compact accelerator designs.
