Book Description
"Two time-series studies of wind, wave, and sediment process-response mechanisms that operate in the beach and inner nearshore areas of western Lake Michigan were conducted as part of a long term field program ... as well as part of the Illinois Coastal Zone Management Project. The ultimate objective of this program is the quantitative prediction of coastal changes utilizing computer modeling techniques ... The studies included systematic observation of environmental parameters and daily surveys of the beach and adjacent inner near-shore zone. Among the environmental parameters measured were barometric pressure, wind speed and direction, wave period, breaker height and angle of approach, and longshore current velocity."--Page [1].

Beach and Nearshore Dynamics in Eastern Lake Michigan
Author: Richard Albert Davis

ISBN:
Category : Coast changes
Languages : en
Pages : 145
Book Description
Detailed systematic surveying of the beach and nearshore environments of two areas in southeastern Lake Michigan permits analysis of changes in morphology with respect to monitored environmental variables. Eighteen variables were measured at 2-hour intervals during a 30-day time series study. Morphologic responses and sedimentary processes can be related to these variables. Construction of a model of sedimentation in the nearshore environment is made possible by daily maps and time-distance diagrams. This provides a four-dimensional dynamic model which is a response model to the measured environmental variables. (Author).

Evaluation of Lake Michigan Nearshore Sediments for Nourishment of Illinois Beaches (Classic Reprint)

Book Description
Excerpt from Evaluation of Lake Michigan Nearshore Sediments for Nourishment of Illinois Beaches Along the Illinois shore, groins have been widely used for maintaining beaches. Longshore drift trapped by these groins provides a buffer between the lake and the bluff. Nevertheless, because an increasing number of groins have captured portions of the littoral drift, and because the littoral drift that moves south from Wisconsin into Illinois has apparently decreased, many of the beaches are not wide enough to prevent erosion of the bluff toe during high lake levels or during severe storms. Under these circumstances, it is necessary not only to build groins but to artificially fill them with sediment during years of lean drift. This sediment should be of a suitable grain size to provide a stable beach wide enough to prevent erosion of the bluff toe.
