Essays, research, and art projects that formulate a Tidalectic worldview, addressing our most threatened ecosystem: the oceans. The oceans cover two-thirds of the planet, shaping human history and culture, home to countless species. Yet we, as mostly land-dwelling humans, often fail to grasp the importance of these vast bodies of water. Climate change destabilizes notions of land-based embeddedness, collapses tropes of time and space, and turns our future more oceanic. Tidalectics imagines an oceanic worldview, with essays, research, and artists' projects that present a different way of engaging with our hydrosphere. Unbound by land-based modes of thinking and living, the essays and research in Tidalectics reflect the rhythmic fluidity of water. Tidalectics emerges from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21)–Academy, the only Western arts organization entirely dedicated to work on climate change and the oceans. In 2016, TBA21–Academy became the first cultural organization to gain UN observer status at the International Seabed Authority Assembly. The book presents newly commissioned work from a range of disciplines and often-neglected perspectives, alongside classic “anchor texts” by such writers as Rachel Carson. The contributors include an anthropologist from Fiji, a Norwegian scholar who specializes in maritime legal history, the author of the first comparative history of Caribbean and Pacific Island literatures, and a poet from Barbados who coined the term “tidalectics” as a play on “dialectics.” The art projects documented in the book form part of an exhibition curated by the volume's editor, and include a video of the infinite whites, blues, and grays of Antarctica; a collection of oceanic smells from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts of Costa Rica; and a quartz submersible capsule designed to communicate with cetaceans. Tidalectics provides a unique collection of the strongest voices in oceanic thinking, bridging arts, oceanography, history, law, and environmental studies. The project (ie the exhibition and the publication) "After Year Zero" takes as its starting point the realignment of global relationships after the Second World War Europe s hour zero. However, it does not recount the post-1945 confrontation of the ideological blocs of the Cold War, and rather focuses on the world-historical caesura of decolonization. This investigation does not revolve around the confrontation, or the separation of identities, between the global North and South, but around models and geographies of collaboration, and reflection on the processes by which the universal is generated. By highlighting particular historical developments, it takes into account the fundamental interconnection of European and African history along with their respective narratives. To design and build new narratives of these historic events, to re-discover unpredictable and forgotten connections and alliances magazines, journals and newspapers will serve as a main source but also as a topic for the divers essays, written by researchers, authors, artists, curators, critics, architects and scientists. Where no art history exists, critical journals and other related platforms are crucial to molding its discourse and involve all the intellectual processes that such an undertaking implies. This first sentence of the mission statement of "NKA - Journal of Contemporary African Art," which was co-founded in 1994 by Okwui Enwezor, the artistic director of Documenta 11 and head of the Haus der Kunst museum in Munich, crystallises the main concern of many magazines launched at various times and different places within the African continent or the African diaspora. The format of magazines is not so much understood as a business model but rather as a periodical and often temporary intervention against a hegemonic voice. These were often set up under precarious circumstances as a collaborative artistic form of organizing discourse, critique and self-expression, but also as a format which renders possible the necessary task of creating a new language to talk about art, life and politics. The publication "After Year Zero "is not only a collection of new text-essays which accompanies the correspondent exhibition (at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin in 2013 and at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, 2015) but contains also eight different visual-essays around different emphases which are designed like a collage of documents, quotes, images, short contextual texts serving as the apparent surface of the historic narrative. Call Ampersand Response is a collaborative artwork made through an exchange of images via email. Between 2011 and 2017 Michael Dumontier and Micah Lexier conceived this activity as a way to share with each other their mutual interest in found images, line drawings and used books. The starting image was of a circle on a rectangle; every subsequent image was visually connected to the previous one. It was understood from the beginning that they had to use images that could be scanned from physical items they already had at home (no images from the Internet) such as children's books, personal collections of technical manuals and assorted ephemera. The call-and-response nature of the enterprise can be appreciated in the distinctive pairs of facing pages that present themselves as you go through the bound book. To reinforce their dual roles each image appears twice in the book, once as response and again as call. One can see the resulting series of images as a closed loop with no beginning and no end. This second, expanded edition includes the entire project of 196 exchanges that make up Dumontier and Lexier's clever, competitive, and meandering loop of images. Creative people in art and design will take pleasure in browsing the book and discover formal analogies, witty poetic correspondence and dadaesque follies, which congregate to an unseen visual narrative.
