Man originated about a million years ago, and insects at least 500 million years ago. Insects constitute the largest Class of the whole living organisms and about 72 per cent of all living animals are insects with 9-15 lakh known species. Insects are omnipresent and each crop we cultivate is being attacked by at least a dozen of insect species called as pests. Apart from the pest insects there are several productive and useful insects. Insects are considered as one of the major constrain in increasing agricultural productivity. Hence it is important to understand about the insects, their biology, classification and management. Our earliest knowledge about insects dates back to 6000 yrs. as our Indian ancestors were well versed in the art of rearing silk worms and weaving silk cloth. Even during 3870 BC an Indian king sent various silken materials as presents to a Persian king.
