Book Description
The Canadian Forces Clothe the Soldier acquisition program aims to equip soldiers with improved protective clothing & equipment that will enhance both their protection & capability in a wide range of environmental & operational scenarios. Many items of in-service clothing & equipment will be replaced with items that reflect the state-of-the art in commercially available technology. Since many replacement items aim to improve environmental protection of the soldier, it is necessary to determine the thermal protection characteristics of both the in-service items intended to be replaced as well as a range of representative options that reflect what is available, off-the-shelf, using current technology. The thermal resistance of clothing, footwear (socks & boots), and hand wear (gloves) was determined utilizing a thermal instrumented mannequin test system. This report describes the thermal mannequin test system, the test protocols, and the results for each item tested. Five tests were conducted, each test measuring the thermal resistance of a number of items. All of the items were tested in a dry condition only. The report summarizes the thermal performance for each item tested; the raw data for each test is contained in an annex.

Thermal Resistance Values of Some Protective Clothing Ensembles (U).

Book Description
The war with Iraq at the beginning of 1991 sparked renewed interest in the development of new chemical protective garments for the armed forces. The military is particularly interested in clothing which provides adequate chemical protection without the current high heat stress experienced with the nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protective ensembles worn at high work rates. This report describes calculations and measurements of the thermal resistance values of some protective NBC ensembles, including the current Canadian forces NBC ensemble and an experimental, vapour-protective garment developed at Defence Research Establishment Ottawa which is called the Interim suit. Calculations are based on simple heat transfer models, physical material properties, and some experimental observations. Measurements were made on a thermal manikin in still air and at two wind speeds.

Niosh Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupational Exposure to Heat and Hot Environments
Author: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (U.S.)
Publisher: National Institute on Drug Abuse
ISBN: 9780160946561
Category : Health & Fitness
Languages : en
Pages : 202
Book Description
Occupational exposure to heat can result in injuries, disease, reduced productivity, and death. To address this hazard, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has evaluated the scientific data on heat stress and hot environments and has updated the Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupational Exposure to Hot Environments [NIOSH 1986a]. This updated guidance includes information about physiological changes that result from heat stress, and relevant studies such as those on caffeine use, evidence to redefine heat stroke, and more. Tactical Display for Soldiers
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309175119
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
This book examines the human factors issues associated with the development, testing, and implementation of helmet-mounted display technology in the 21st Century Land Warrior System. Because the framework of analysis is soldier performance with the system in the full range of environments and missions, the book discusses both the military context and the characteristics of the infantry soldiers who will use the system. The major issues covered include the positive and negative effects of such a display on the local and global situation awareness of the individual soldier, an analysis of the visual and psychomotor factors associated with each design feature, design considerations for auditory displays, and physical sources of stress and the implications of the display for affecting the soldier's workload. The book proposes an innovative approach to research and testing based on a three-stage strategy that begins in the laboratory, moves to controlled field studies, and culminates in operational testing.
