Baron Friedrich Von Hügel and the Modernist Crisis in England

Baron Friedrich Von Hügel and the Modernist Crisis in England PDF Author: Lawrence F. Barmann
Publisher: CUP Archive
ISBN: 9780521081788
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Between 1890 and 1910 the Roman Catholic Church underwent a severe moral and intellectual crisis. A group of progressive Catholic scholars, later dubbed the 'modernists', challenged the authority of official Catholic teaching in many areas, basing their ideas on contemporary movements generally. The official reaction was at first discouraging and then openly hostile - most of the modernists were forced to leave the Church and their writings were placed in the Index. As one might expect, the accounts of the crisis by those who were closely involved in it are generally strongly partisan; moreover, its effects are still evident in present disputes in the Church but in 1972 the time came for an objective historical assessment of the major figures of the crisis as a means for understanding the movement as a whole. In this authoritative study Dr Barmann reconstructs in detail von Hugel's involvement in the modernist movement, particularly in England and rejects the received explanations of his survival in the Church.

The Spiritual Formation of Evelyn Underhill

The Spiritual Formation of Evelyn Underhill PDF Author: Robyn Wrigley-Carr
Publisher: SPCK
ISBN: 0281081581
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 228

Book Description
Given the renewed interest in Evelyn Underhill with the publication of Evelyn Underhill’s Prayer Book (SPCK, January 2018), the time seems right to offer a fresh perspective on the writer’s spiritual formation. Having undertaken original research, Robyn Wrigley-Carr first explores the spiritual nurture that Evelyn Underhill received from Baron Friedrich von Hügel (‘to whom I owe my spiritual life’). Second she reveals the spiritual nurture that Underhill gave to people herself, utilizing both published and unpublished materials. At the heart of the book is the idea of a ‘long obedience in the same direction’: Underhill’s life had purpose and meaning as a result of the Baron’s spiritual direction and the soul care she tirelessly bestowed on others.

Book Description
Ellen M. Leonard's study of Baron Friedrich von Hügel's life, thought, and spiritual vision rediscovers this important Catholic voice from the turn of the 20th Century. Hügel was a lay theologian who maintained both his personal equilibrium and his spiritual leadership role during the complex days of the "modernist movement." Hügel sees three elements of religion: the authoritative, historical, and institutional; the critical, speculative, and philosophical; the intuitive, vocational, and mystical. Leonard's study concentrates both on Hügel's writings and spiritual activities.

But how do we recognise his coming and make ourselves open to it? In Music of Eternity, the Archbishop of York’s Advent Book 2021, Robyn Wrigley-Carr shares a series of meditations exploring the nature God’s comings. Skilfully weaving together Underhill’s writings with the psalms and short prayers, she shows how, as Christians, we can embrace God’s coming and be transformed by them in order to better love others. Full of rich warmth and encouragement, these Christian meditations will help you make the most of the Advent season and more able to connect with God at all times.
