Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary Italian Grammar In writing this little grammar of my native language, it has been my chief object to exhibit in as clear and easy a form as possible the main features of the accidence and syntax combined in their applications to those words and phrases which are most frequently employed in polite conversation. The Italian language, as now Spoken und written by the educated classes, is very simple and precise. Long periods and intricate inversions are no longer in use. We admire them in the works of our standard authors of by-gone ages, but we take great care not to imitate them. Thus, without losing anything of its former grace and harmony, the Italian language has become in this century a very easy language too. This book being intended for beginners and travellers, I have added to it, in the form of an Appendix, a selec tion of useful words and phrases, which, it is confidently hoped, will greatly assist pupils wishing to speak the language as soon as possible. It was written for the children, not for grammarians and critical scholars of the language. Its chief aim is not to propose new principles, but to simplify and make easy such as are already known, and adapt them to the capacities of young pupils. The effort has also been made by means of pictures and various novel devices to awaken and sustain the interest of the pupil and relieve the study of much of its tediousness. The author has endeavored to put himself on the same plane with the children, to think as they think and talk as they talk, avoiding at the same time that silly grandpapa style so often met with in so-called juvenile text-books. Throughout the whole work the principle is recognized that grammar is not a code of dead rules, petrified in the writings of past or present authors, but rather the expression of the living genius of a language, wearing its livery and subserving its needs. Believing that the first grammatical essays of the child should be upon the words of his own little vocabulary, and not upon the language of great poets and other writers, the author has aimed to teach the young pupil first to use correctly his own familiar words in conveying his thoughts, as well as to enable him subsequently to understand language which he may read or hear, and appropriate its forms to his own use in expressing the ideas of his maturer mind. An Italian Grammar With Exercises (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Mary Vance Young

Book Description
Excerpt from An Italian Grammar With Exercises This book is intended for class use and reference. Practical utility has been considered more than harmony of. Design. This will explain what might be taken for a lack of plan. For instance, the general rules for the inflection of adjectives being given in the first chapter, the chapter on adjectives is placed after those on verbs and pronouns. In order that regular verbal inflection may be thoroughly learned before irregular forms are taken up the chapter on irregular verbs is rather widely separated from that on the regular, and for the same reason the regular conjugations are given before the auxiliaries (the present tenses of the principal auxiliaries being familiar to the pupil from the first lesson); the chapter on the modification of nouns by means of pre fixes and suffixes does not follow that on nouns, and numerals are treated of quite at the end of the book. Numerals belong rather to the dictionary than to the grammar and may conveniently be learned in connection with reading or oral exercises. This chapter, as well as that on prepositions, is intended largely for reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
