Book Description
This early work by Ring Lardner was originally published in 1925 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. 'Haircut' is a dark satire about moral blindness. Ring Lardner was born in Niles, Michigan in 1885. He studied engineering at the Armour Institute of Technology in Chicago, but did not complete his first semester. In 1907, Lardner obtained his first job as journalist with the South Bend Times. Six years later, he published his first successful book, You Know Me Al, an epistolary novel written in the form of letters by 'Jack Keefe', a bush-league baseball player, to a friend back home. A huge hit, the book earned the appreciation of Virginia Woolf and others. Lardner went on to write such well-known short stories as 'Haircut', 'Some Like Them Cold', 'The Golden Honeymoon', 'Alibi Ike', and 'A Day with Conrad Green'.

You Next

You Next PDF Author: Antonio Johnson
Publisher: Chicago Review Press
ISBN: 1641602880
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 307

Book Description
"A stirring work . . . images meet text to convey a most handsome portrait of Black barbering in America as a revered cultural practice. Honest, intelligent, poignant—You Next is brilliant from cover to cover." —Maurice Wallace, Rutgers University An intimate photographic exploration of the ways Black barber shops operate as sites for the cultivation of Black male identity and wellness Growing up, getting a haircut was a weekly event Antonio M. Johnson looked forward to more than anything. There in that tilted chair surrounded by members of his community and totems of a shared experience, Johnson felt safe—felt like anything was possible. Barber shops are more than places simply to get a cut. They are where Black men can speak and receive feedback about who we are, who we want to be, and what we believe to be true about the world around us. The interpretation of the barber shop as community center falls short of capturing what they really are for so many Black men: sanctuaries in a hostile land. You Next is an intimate photographic exploration of Black barber shops in major US cities—Gary, Indiana; Washington DC; New York City; Oakland; Atlanta; Los Angeles; Detroit; New Orleans; Montgomery; Memphis, and Johnson's hometown of Philadelphia. These photos, interviews, and essays tell the full story of the Black barber shop in America.

On the Sunny Side

On the Sunny Side PDF Author: Wynn Gadkar-Wilcox
Publisher: Mad Hatter Chorus
ISBN: 0692973214
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 138

Book Description
When a group of five singers gathered in Danbury, Connecticut in 1966 to discuss forming a barber- shop chapter called the Mad Hatters, they could scarcely imagine that in less than a decade, that group would grow to nearly one hundred men and would be among most talented, irreverent, and exciting choruses in the northeastern United States. Yet by the early 1990s, less than fifteen years from its heyday in the mid-seventies, the Mad Hatters almost ceased to exist. Why did this chorus grow so quickly, and then devolve into near oblivion, only to rise again like a phoenix from the ashes? Eschewing simple answers, Gadkar-Wilcox weaves together the changing interpersonal dynamics among the men of the chapter, the demographics of the Danbury area, and the impact of broader social change in the United States. He demonstrates that barbershop singers struggled to adjust to the social, racial, and cultural changes of the 1960s and 1970s, but that they also rose and fell based on the individual personalities of their leaders. On the Sunny Side shows that even though organizations are bound to reflect, and be constrained by larger social, economic, and historical forces, they also come to embody the spirit of the individuals who comprise them.
