Historical Dictionary of Witchcraft

Historical Dictionary of Witchcraft PDF Author: Jonathan Durrant
Publisher: Scarecrow Press
ISBN: 0810875128
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 293

Book Description
Witchcraft has proven an important, if difficult, historical subject to investigate and interpret over the last four decades or so. Modern historical research into witchcraft began as an attempt to tease out the worldview of ordinary people in 16th- and 17th-century England, but it quickly expanded to encompass the history of witchcraft in most cultures and societies that have existed with scholarly studies now extending back to the time of earliest law code that punished sorcery, the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi (1792-1750 B.C.E.), and forward to the last witchcraft cases in England, those of Helen Duncan and Jane Yorke, tried in 1944. There has also been a significant amount of interest in the development of the modern religion of witchcraft, or Wicca, as various forms of neo-paganism continue to attract adherents. The second edition of Historical Dictionary of Witchcraft covers the history of the Witchcraft from 1750 B.C.E. though the modern day. This is done through a chronology, an introductory essay, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 300 cross-referenced entries on witch hunts, witchcraft trials, and related practices around the world. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the history of witchcraft.

The Unmasking of English Dictionaries

The Unmasking of English Dictionaries PDF Author: R. M. W. Dixon
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108382010
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 273

Book Description
When we look up a word in a dictionary, we want to know not just its meaning but also its function and the circumstances under which it should be used in preference to words of similar meaning. Standard dictionaries do not address such matters, treating each word in isolation. R. M. W. Dixon puts forward a new approach to lexicography that involves grouping words into 'semantic sets', to describe what can and cannot be said, and providing explanations for this. He provides a critical survey of the evolution of English lexicography from the earliest times, showing how Samuel Johnson's classic treatment has been amended in only minor ways. Written in an easy and accessible style, the book focuses on the rampant plagiarism between lexicographers, on ways of comparing meanings of words, and on the need to link lexicon with grammar. Dixon tells an engrossing story that puts forward a vision for the future.

English in Modern Times

English in Modern Times PDF Author: Joan C Beal
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1444119133
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
English in Modern Times describes the development of the English language from 1700 until 1945, and argues that it is in the course of this later modern English period that the characteristics of 'modern' English evolved. This is the first undergraduate text to cover the whole of this important period, which has been called the 'Cinderella' of English historical linguistics because of its lack of representation in scholarly literature. This book is sociohistorical in orientation, arguing that social changes in the Anglophone world need to be taken into account if we are to understand the linguistic changes that occurred during this period. Further chapters deal with changes in vocabulary, syntax and morphology and phonology and with the attempts of lexicographers, grammarians and elocutionists to arrest and control these changes by codifying the language. Unlike many earlier histories of English, 'English in Modern Times' does not define 'English' as confined to Standard (English) English, but also considers the development of extraterritorial Englishes and non-standard varieties of British English in the Later Modern period.

Misogynoir Transformed

Misogynoir Transformed PDF Author: Moya Bailey
Publisher: NYU Press
ISBN: 1479890499
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 241

Book Description
Where racism and sexism meet—an understanding of anti-Black misogyny When Moya Bailey first coined the term misogynoir, she defined it as the ways anti-Black and misogynistic representation shape broader ideas about Black women, particularly in visual culture and digital spaces. She had no idea that the term would go viral, touching a cultural nerve and quickly entering into the lexicon. Misogynoir now has its own Wikipedia page and hashtag, and has been featured on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and CNN’s Cuomo Prime Time. In Misogynoir Transformed, Bailey delves into her groundbreaking concept, highlighting Black women’s digital resistance to anti-Black misogyny on YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, and other platforms. At a time when Black women are depicted as more ugly, deficient, hypersexual, and unhealthy than their non-Black counterparts, Bailey explores how Black women have bravely used social-media platforms to confront misogynoir in a number of courageous—and, most importantly, effective—ways. Focusing on queer and trans Black women, she shows us the importance of carving out digital spaces, where communities are built around queer Black webshows and hashtags like #GirlsLikeUs. Bailey shows how Black women actively reimagine the world by engaging in powerful forms of digital resistance at a time when anti-Black misogyny is thriving on social media. A groundbreaking work, Misogynoir Transformed highlights Black women’s remarkable efforts to disrupt mainstream narratives, subvert negative stereotypes, and reclaim their lives.

ISBN: 9781850706809
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 164

Book Description
The medical-legal arena covers the dynamic interactions between law and medicine, in particular the regulation and utilization of medicine by law. There remain many terms and concepts that are still undefined, hazily defined, confusingly defined, or defined with a significant double meaning. Then there are those commonly used but unnamed methods that are clumsy to explain. The Concise Dictionary of Medical-Legal Terms: A General Guide to Interpretation and Usage provides an easy-to-use reference to the common words and phrases used in medicine and law. Like oil and water, the methods of thinking in law and medicine do not always mix well. This dictionary defines legal terms in their medical context as well as medical terms in their legal context. If you are a physician required to appear in court or to write medical reports, this dictionary guides you through the labyrinth of legal terms as they pertain to medicine. If you are a lawyer and you need to understand medical conditions and injuries, the dictionary provides the clear, concise definitions that add clarity to the settlement of problems that arise in courts.
