Nurse education literature reflects that educators face a problem of how to provide meaningful clinical learning experiences that help undergraduate nursing students develop clinical judgment and increase self-efficacy. Many schools of nursing are incorporating high-fidelity simulation as an alternative clinical teaching strategy, yet there is little quantitative evidence to support the effectiveness of this teaching method in undergraduate nursing education, particularly regarding the development of clinical judgment. The purpose of this quasi-experimental time series design study was to explore the effectiveness of using multiple high-fidelity simulation experiences to increase perceptions of clinical judgment and self-efficacy in baccalaureate nursing students. Self-report data was collected following three different high-fidelity simulation experiences at three points in time. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant increase (p = .041) in students' perceptions of clinical judgment occurred between Time 1 and Time 3. Students' perceptions of self-efficacy also increased significantly from Time 1 to Time 3 (p = .003) and Time 2 to Time 3(p = .001). Regression analysis revealed a slight positive correlation (sig. = .003) between students' perceptions of self-efficacy and clinical judgment.

The aim is to determine if participation in a high-fidelity simulation increases student levels of self-confidence. Thirty-eight first year associate degree nursing students enrolled in a medical-surgical course in a southeastern community college participated in a diabetes simulation as part of their course. Students then voluntarily completed a survey indicating self-confidence following the simulation. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the overall mean of student responses to each question on the National League for Nursing (NLN) Student Satisfaction and Self Confidence in Learning Tool. Students rated the teaching helpful and effective with a mean score of 4.47 (sd = .951). Students indicated that simulation materials used were motivating and helped with learning with a mean score of 4.53 (sd = .862). Participants indicated confidence in mastery of simulation content with a mean score of 3.63 (sd = 1.172). Participants rated confidence in development of skills and knowledge attainment with a mean score of 4.11 (sd = 1.06). Students rated knowledge of how to use simulation activities to learn nursing skills with a mean score of 4.18 (sd = .955). The study suggested confidence in mastery of skills and content covered and perception of simulation as helpful and effective occur concurrently following the simulation experience. Data analysis indicated student's knowledge of application of simulation activities and confidence in the development of needed skills from the simulation occur mutually.

Nursing educators are increasingly utilizing high-fidelity simulation to provide realistic educational experiences to prepare students to enter the workforce. High-fidelity simulation is utilized with the belief when students encounter real-life patients they will be more confident in their ability to care for them. This quantitative study examined the effects of high-fidelity simulation on senior nursing students perceived self-efficacy and perceived practice readiness. The sample (N=48) consisted of senior associate degree nursing students at a community college in the Southeast. The findings showed high-fidelity simulation had a positive effect on students perceived self-efficacy and perceived practice readiness at certain points in the study, while other times not demonstrating a positive correlation. Implications for use of simulation as a teaching strategy in nursing education and recommendations for future research were proposed.

Changes in nursing educational programs have led to the incorporation of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) into clinical teaching, yet little is known about students" experiences with this teaching-learning modality. Therefore, this hermeneutic phenomenological study was conducted to examine the lived experience of HFS for undergraduate nursing students in the context of pediatric nursing care. In-depth interviews were carried out with 12 students and were analyzed for themes using the approach of van Manen (1998). The essence of the experience is that it was eye-opening for the students. It was eye-opening in two ways. It was a surprisingly realistic nursing experience as reflected in the following themes: perceiving the manikin as a real patient, saving my patient"s life, feeling like a real nurse, and feeling relief after mounting stress. It was a surprisingly valuable learning experience as reflected in the following themes: increased awareness of the art and science of nursing, increased recognition of the importance of teamwork, feeling more prepared for clinical practice, and wanting more simulation experiences. The findings from this study can be used to inform nursing education.

There is growing interest regarding the use of high fidelity simulation within nursing education. Educators are beginning to incorporate this new teaching modality into various clinical courses. One area in particular is pediatrics, which requires nursing students to think outside the context of adult care, thus applying skills and knowledge specific to pediatric practice.
