Aviation in the Digital Age

Aviation in the Digital Age PDF Author: Ruwantissa Abeyratne
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030482189
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 384

Book Description
All of the topics discussed in this book – from sovereignty to cybercrime, and from drones to the identification of passengers & privacy – are profoundly affected by algorithms; so are air traffic services and aeronautical communications. All of these aviation-related aspects are addressed in a 75-year-old treaty called the Chicago Convention and its Annexes, which, as this book argues, needs to be reviewed with a focus on its relevance and applicability in connection with Moore’s Law, which posits that transistors in computer microchips double in speed, power and performance every two years, while the cost of computers is halved during the same period. Firstly, in terms of traditional territorial sovereignty, we have arrived at a point where there is a concept of data sovereignty and ownership that raises issues of privacy. Data transmission becomes ambivalent in terms of territorial sovereignty, and the Westphalian model may not be the perfect answer. Whether it be the manufacture of airplanes, the transfer of data on individuals, or the transmission of aeronautical and telecommunications information – all have to be carried out in accordance with the same fundamental principle: duty of care. Against the backdrop of the relevant provisions of the Chicago Convention and its Annexes, the detailed analysis presented here covers key areas such as: megatrends; AI and international law in the digital age; blockchain and aviation; drones; aviation and telecommunications; aviation and the Internet; cybersecurity; and digital identification of passengers & privacy. In turn, the book suggests how we can best manage this transition.

Aviation Safety and Security

Aviation Safety and Security PDF Author: Stephen James Wright
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781032013442
Category : Aeronautics
Languages : en
Pages : 186

Book Description
This book focuses on ways to better manage and prevent aircraft-based homicide events while in flight using alternate technology to replace the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and/or Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) functions. While these events are infrequent, the implementation of real-time predictive maintenance allows aircraft operators to better manage both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance events. Aviation Safety and Security: Utilizing Technology to Prevent Aircraft Fatality explores historical events of in-flight homicide and includes relevant accident case study excerpts from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB).FEATURESExplores historical events of in-flight homicide and offers solutions for ways to mitigate riskExplains how alternate technologies can be implemented to address in-flight safety issuesDemonstrates that metrics for change are not solely for safety but also for financial savings for aircraft operationIncludes relevant accident case study excerpts from the NTSB and AAIBExpresses the need for real-time predictive maintenanceStephen J Wright is an academic Professor at the faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University, Finland, specializing in aviation, aeronautical engineering, and aircraft systems.

Review of Web Applications Security and Intrusion Detection in Air Traffic Control Systems

Review of Web Applications Security and Intrusion Detection in Air Traffic Control Systems PDF Author: Rebecca C. Leng
Publisher: DIANE Publishing
ISBN: 1437917259
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 23

Book Description
The need to protect Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems from cyber attacks requires enhanced attention because the FAA has increasingly turned toward the use of commercial software and Internet Protocol (IP)-based technologies to modernize ATC systems. Now, attackers can take advantage of software vulnerabilities in commercial IP products to exploit ATC systems, which is worrisome at a time when America is facing increased threats from sophisticated cyber attacks. This audit determined whether: (1) Web applications used in supporting ATC operations are properly secured to prevent unauthorized access to ATC systems; and (2) FAA¿s network intrusion-detection capability is effective in monitoring ATC cyber-security incidents. ManusCrypt

ManusCrypt PDF Author: Prashant A Upadhyaya
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1040152112
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Information security primarily serves these six distinct purposes—authentication, authorization, prevention of data theft, sensitive data safety / privacy, data protection / integrity, non-repudiation. The entire gamut of infosec rests upon cryptography. The author begins as a protagonist to explain that modern cryptography is more suited for machines rather than humans. This is explained through a brief history of ciphers and their evolution into cryptography and its various forms. The premise is further reinforced by a critical assessment of algorithm-based modern cryptography in the age of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain. With simple and lucid examples, the author demonstrates that the hypothetical "man versus machine" scenario is not by chance, but by design. The book doesn’t end here like most others that wind up with a sermon on ethics and eventual merging of humans with technology (i.e., singularity). A very much practicable solution has been presented with a real-world use-case scenario, wherein infosec is designed around the needs, biases, flaws and skills of humans. This innovative approach, as trivial as it may seem to some, has the power to bring about a paradigm shift in the overall strategy of information technology that can change our world for the better.
