Advanced French Grammar

Advanced French Grammar PDF Author: Monique L'Huillier
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521484251
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 722

Book Description
This 1999 reference grammar, written for advanced students of French, their teachers, and others who want a better understanding of the French language, combines the best of modern and traditional approaches. Its objective is not only practical mastery of the language, but familiarity with its structure. Taking into account modern linguistic research, Advanced French Grammar approaches the French language primarily through the study of syntactic structures, but without excessive emphasis on formalism. It provides a generous number of examples, based on the author's own experience of teaching French to English-speakers, to help the student to understand the different meanings of apparently similar syntactic alternatives. The norms of 'correct expression' are given together with current usage and deviations, and appendixes provide information on the 1990 spelling reforms and on numbers. A substantial index of French and English words and of topics provides easy access to the text itself.

A la Francaise

A la Francaise PDF Author: Marie Gontier Geno
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 9780819187376
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : fr
Pages : 372

Book Description
A la Francaise is designed to help English speakers to overcome numerous and common difficulties in their study of French. An impressive collection of varied mistakes made by students at both intermediate and advanced levels has shown that certain problems arise with great frequency and tenacity; these form the raison d'etre of the book. Since the errors usually stem from the English thought process, all the entries are in that language. Grammatical and lexical difficulties are presented together, alphabetically, for quick and easy reference. The explanations, in French, are as concise as possible; they are often illustrated by tables. This book is neither a grammar text nor a dictionary. Each entry deals only with the difficulty at hand. Grammatical entries emphasize essentially the differences between English and French. Lexical entries are limited to the problem created in translation. q Identifies common mistakes in French q Targets the intermediate or advanced student of French q Presents both grammar and vocabulary entries in alphabetical order q Supplements the composition or conversation class q Serves as a correcting manual and general reference

Spatial Prepositions

Spatial Prepositions PDF Author: Claude Vandeloise
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 9780226847283
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
This striking study of the meaning and use of the major spatial prepositions in French provides valuable insight into how the human mind organizes spatial relationships. Most previous analyses of spatial prepositions have assumed that their semantic properties can be adequately explained by familiar logical and geometrical concepts. Thus, the standard view of the preposition "in" as it appears in the sentence "the ball is in the bag" postulates that it refers to the geometrical relation of inclusion. This paradigm, however, falters when faced with the contrast in acceptability between sentences such as "the bulb is in the socket" and "the bottle is in the cap." The force exerted by the "landmark" (a conceptually fixed object) on the "target" (a moveable object) is crucial in this difference: the functional notion of containment seems more operational in the use of the preposition "in" than inclusion. That is, what are taken to be the landmark and the target depend greatly on the functions these objects serve in the human scheme. This offers important clues to otherwise problematic linguistic quirks, such as why one sleeps in one's bed, while one is said to lie on one's deathbed. While many of the examples apply in English as well as French, there are some noteworthy differences—in French one sits on a chair, but in a couch. Vandeloise convincingly argues that it is precisely this subjective element which makes a standard geometrical account unfeasible.
