Book Description
Excerpt from Autobiography, Collateral Reminiscences, Arguments in Important Causes, Speeches, Addresses, Lectures and Other Writings, Vol. 1 of 2 My life has been mainly that of a laborious, persevering, earnest lawyer, and my studies have been principally directed to obtaining success in my profession. Absorbing and exact ing as that profession always is, it was not allowed, however, entirely to engross me. It was never permitted to interfere with the discharge of my duty as a citizen. At a very early period of life, and some years before being entitled to vote indeed, as soon as I understood the nature of our Government, the importance of the duty of exercising the right of suffrage intelligently was deeply impressed upon me, and I have never failed to discharge that duty. By classical and general read ing, I increased my knowledge, strove to keep up with the progress of science, arts, and literature, and endeavored, as opportunity offered, by addresses, lectures, and writings, to benefit and improve my fellow-men. Speeches and Forensic Arguments, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Daniel Webster

Category : Political Science

Pages : 492

Book Description
Excerpt from Speeches and Forensic Arguments, Vol. 2 The position which Mr. Webster fills in the eyes of the country, by this general consent, is the more honorable to him, when it is recollected that it is the victory gained by talent, wholly unaided by those advantages of opportunity, which, to other men, have given official standing, influence, and political power. Mr. Webster came forward at a period'when that ascendency, which New England possessed from the early settlement of the colonies, and which was strengthened by her agency in the great triumphs of the revolution, had passed away. Other portions of the country had grown up the West was settled; the Virginian dynasty was in undisputed possession of the public favor; and new centres of political influ ence had been established, in which New England was allowed to have no share. Had he been a foreigner, barely naturalized, he would have come forward with less prejudice than as a New Eng lander of talent and promise; At the early age of thirty, and without preliminary training in the state assemblies, he rose at once, in the Congress of 1812, to an undisputed eminence; and it was said of him, even then, by one of the very few who could have dis puted his rank, (mr. Lowndes, ) that the North had not his equal, nor the South his superior. What might not have been his career, had he sprung from the other side of the Potomac! He would have succeeded Mr. Monroe, as inevitably as sunrise succeeds the dawn, and would have been thought to sustain, with increased lustre, the line of the great men of Virginia. Book Description
Excerpt from Speeches, Arguments, Addresses, and Letters of Clement L. Vallandigham The maternal family of Mr. Vallandigham (pronounced Vallan'digham) is Scotch-Irish, his grandfather, James Laird, having been born in the county Down, north Ireland. His mother, Rebecca Laird, was born on the Susquehanna, in York county, Pennsylvania, and still survives at the age of seventy-five, residing in New Lisbon, Ohio. She had two brothers, Episcopal clergymen, and one a member of the bar, John Laird, who died in 1824, while an Ohio State Senator from Columbiana county. She is a woman of superior intellect, strong will, and much force of character, and of singular piety. Mr. Vallandigham's paternal ancestors were Flemings, the name being originally Van Landeghem. One of that name was one of the four most distinguished Flemish knights at the battle of "the Golden Spurs," fought by the "Lion of Flanders," near Courtrai, in 1302. There is still a village, Landeghem by name, near Ghent, in East Flanders. In the reign of Louis XIV. they were French Protestants, or "Huguenots." Michael Van Landeghem emigrated to Virginia previous to the year 1690, an exile for religious opinion's sake, and settled in what was then Northumberland county. He became a considerable land-owner in that and the adjoining counties. His son Michael was born in the same county, in 1705, but died in Fairfax county, not many miles from the now classic stream of "Bull Run," where his son George Vallandigham (the spelling of the name being now changed) was born about 1736. He studied law in Prince George county, Maryland, where be married a daughter of Colonel Joseph Noble, whose mother's name was Dent (of English descent, and one of the oldest families in the State); and about 1773 removed to what was then Youghiogheny county, Virginia, near Pittsburg; where his second son, Clement, was born in 1778. About the time of his migration West, the "Logan War" with the Ohio Indians, broke out; and from that time till Wayne's victory, in 1794, Colonel Vallandigham was obliged, with a brief interval now and then, to lay aside his Blackstone for the rifle or the sword. He marched as an officer under Lord Dunmore, the last colonial Governor of Virginia, in his expedition, in 1774, against the Chillicothe Towns. Book Description
Excerpt from Speeches and Occasional Addresses, Vol. 2 The bill to repeal the act of Congress of 2d March, 1837, regulating pilots, being under consideration, Mr. Dix said: - Mr. President: The bill under consideration provides for the repeal of the act of Congress of the 2d March, 1837, entitled "An act concerning pilots." Before I show what the act thus proposed to be repealed is, it may be proper to state what was the existing system in relation to pilotage before Congress had any authority to legislate on the subject. Before the adoption of the Constitution of the United States, each State regulated its own pilots. It prescribed the mode of their appointment, their duties, and their liabilities. The Colony of New York, as early as 1694, passed a law providing for their appointment by the Governor and Council, and prohibited all other persons from piloting any vessel into or out of the port of New York, under a pecuniary penalty. From that time to the adoption of the Constitution, the State legislated exclusively on the subject. The regulation of pilotage within its own jurisdiction was a State right. The Articles of Confederation found and left it so. The Constitution of the United States gives to Congress the power "to regulate commerce with foreign nations and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes." Under this delegation of authority, Congress assumed to legislate on the subject of pilotage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Speeches, Lectures and Letters (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Wendell Phillips

Book Description
Excerpt from Speeches, Lectures and Letters These Speeches and Lectures have been collected into a volume at the earnest and repeated requests of the personal friends and the followers of Mr. Phillips. In committing them to the Publisher, he wrote: - "I send you about one half of my speeches which have been reported during the last ten years. Put them into a volume, if you think it worth while. Four or five of them ('Idols, ' 'The Election, ' 'Mobs and Education, ' 'Disunion, ' 'Progress, ') were delivered in such circumstances as made it proper I should set down beforehand, substantially, what I had to say. The preservation of the rest you owe to phonography; and most of them to the unequalled skill and accuracy, which almost every New England speaker living can attest, of my friend, J. M. W. Yerrinton. The first speech, relating to the murder of Lovejoy, was reported by B. F. Hallett, Esq. As these reports were made for some daily or weekly paper, I had little time for correction. Giving them such verbal revision as the interval allowed, I left the substance and shape unchanged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
