Australia's Foreign Economic Policy and ASEAN

Australia's Foreign Economic Policy and ASEAN PDF Author: Jiro Okamoto
Publisher: Institute of Southeast Asian Studies
ISBN: 9789812309747
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
In this book, Jiro Okamoto explores the development of Australia's foreign economic policy towards ASEAN. He examines in detail decisive factors such as changes in the international and regional environment and the replacement of a dominant policy coalition with another in Australia's domestic policy process. His analysis shows that the shifts in Australia's ASEAN policy have not only closely reflected changes in Australia's overall foreign economic policy orientation, but that Australia's ASEAN policy strongly drove the change at key junctures. His work also offers important insights into the prospect of an "inclusive" economic integration process in East Asia. Although Australia's foreign economic policy has been an important element in regional economic cooperation, its inclusion in the East Asian integration process still remains ambiguous.

The Political Economy of Manufacturing Protection

The Political Economy of Manufacturing Protection PDF Author: Christopher Findlay
Publisher: Routledge

Book Description
Protection is a persistent feature of economic policy in developed and developing countries alike. However, it is now widely accepted that high protection holds back economic growth. Why is protection so pervasive when it is widely recognised to be against the national interest of the countries which impose it? Economists from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia have written about their countries and draw conclusions on the causes of protection from statistical analysis and from interindustry structure.

This thoroughly revised edition keeps it fully abreast of a changing world. This book is indispensable for anyone who follows current affairs. Its contents range from a concise analysis of the practice and politics of making foreign policy—what it is that diplomats and foreign ministers do—to the exploration of Australia’s relationships, as a middle power, with all regions of the world. Among the many subjects covered is the new internationalist agenda, from human rights and global environmental issues to arms control. Australia’s Foreign Relations will be equally valuable for students of politics, history, international relations and economics—for, as the authors stress, foreign policy and Australia’s economic fortunes are now inextricably linked.
