Private associations organized around a common cult, occupation, ethnic identity, neighborhood or family were among the principal means of organizing social and economic life in the ancient Mediterranean. They offered opportunities for sociability, cultic activities, mutual support and contexts in which to display and recognize virtuous achievement. This volume collects 140 inscriptions and papyri from Ptolemaic and early Roman Egypt, along with translations, notes, commentary, and analytic indices. The dossier of association-related documents substantially enhances our knowledge of the extent, activities, and importance of private associations in the ancient Mediterranean, since papyri, unavailable from most other locations in the Mediterranean, preserve a much wider range of data than epigraphical monuments. The dossier from Egypt includes not only honorific decrees, membership lists, bylaws, dedications, and funerary monuments, but monthly accounts of expenditures and income, correspondence between guild secretaries and local officials, price and tax declarations, records of legal actions concerning associations, loan documents, petitions to local authorities about associations, letters of resignation, and many other papyrological genres. The present position of studies relating to the complex of buildings called by Herodotus the Egyptian Labyrinth is far from satisfactory, as also are those that concern the Hawara funerary complex of King Amenemhat III that is generally identified with it. The purpose of this book is therefore to take a new look at the actual site itself and its recorded remains with the aim of using only this evidence and, where necessary, associating it with analogous material from other Old and Middle Kingdom pyramid complexes, in order to arrive at a solution as to what once constituted the Hawara necropolis.

There seems to be no brief English equivalent for the concept of a +Berichtigungsliste; . This demotic +Berichtigungsliste; collects and critically presents corrections and supplements to editions of demotic documentary texts: papyri, ostraka, inscriptions, mummy labels, graffiti - everything demotic that was not clearly written as a secular or religious literary composition. We have added all the information we have found concerning inventory numbers and photographs as well as republications of the texts in question which the scholar working with these texts might like to have. Although the +Berichtigungsliste; chiefly concerns text editions, be they published in monographs or articles, texts that have been published only in photography or facsimile are also included. The period covered for the publications that have been ransacked for the purpose of our +Berichtigungsliste; is roughly the Twentieth Century: 1900-2000. In subsequent volumes, we intend to extend this time-range into the Nineteenth Century as well as into the future.
