Mark Twain's Own Autobiography

Mark Twain's Own Autobiography PDF Author: Mark Twain
Publisher: Univ of Wisconsin Press
ISBN: 0299234738
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 379

Book Description
Mark Twain’s Own Autobiography stands as the last of Twain’s great yarns. Here he tells his story in his own way, freely expressing his joys and sorrows, his affections and hatreds, his rages and reverence—ending, as always, tongue-in-cheek: “Now, then, that is the tale. Some of it is true.” More than the story of a literary career, this memoir is anchored in the writer’s relation to his family—what they meant to him as a husband, father, and artist. It also brims with many of Twain’s best comic anecdotes about his rambunctious boyhood in Hannibal, his misadventures in the Nevada territory, his notorious Whittier birthday speech, his travels abroad, and more. Twain published twenty-five “Chapters from My Autobiography” in the North American Review in 1906 and 1907. “I intend that this autobiography . . . shall be read and admired a good many centuries because of its form and method—form and method whereby the past and the present are constantly brought face to face, resulting in contrasts which newly fire up the interest all along, like contact of flint with steel.” For this second edition, Michael Kiskis’s introduction references a wealth of critical work done on Twain since 1990. He also adds a discussion of literary domesticity, locating the autobiography within the history of Twain’s literary work and within Twain’s own understanding and experience of domestic concerns.

Book Description
An autobiographical journal isn't about exact truths. It's about your truth. It's not just about what you've lived: it's about how. If you're looking for a book to precisely catalog every minute detail of your life, immortalizing you for future generations in bullet-pointed lists and emotionless facts--this isn't it. Using the proven recall techniques in this journal, you'll navigate your childhood, teen years, early adulthood, twenties, thirties, and every decade to follow. This journal goes beyond surface details, drilling down into the heart of all the things that have made you...well, you. Not only will you leave a vivid and detailed account behind for your children, grandchildren, and future generations, you'll also improve your own well-being in the meantime: research shows journaling improves mental health and acuity, and that active memory recall can improve memory going forward. When you finish, what you'll hold in your hands will be far more than a book, and wholly unlike any other journal out there. You'll have the truest version of your life that can ever be told, by the person who knows you best.

The Development of Greek Biography

The Development of Greek Biography PDF Author: Arnaldo Momigliano
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 9780674200418
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 160

Book Description
Arnaldo Momigliano traces the growth of ancient biography from the fifth century to the first century B.C. He asks new questions about the origins and development of Greek biography, and makes full use of new evidence uncovered in recent decades from papyri and other sources. By clarifying the social and intellectual implication of the fact that the Greeks kept biography and autobiography distinct from historiography, he contributes to an understanding of a basic dichotomy in the Western tradition of historical writing. The Development of Greek Biography is fully annotated, and includes a bibliography designed to serve as an introduction to the study of biography in general.

Narrating the Self and Nation in Kenyan Autobiographical Writings

Narrating the Self and Nation in Kenyan Autobiographical Writings PDF Author: Samuel Ndogo
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 3643906617
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
Author Samuel Ndogo offers an understanding of the autobiographical genre in contemporary Kenyan literature. He draws attention to life-writing as a form of cultural re-imagination in post-colonial Africa. Taking into consideration contradictions and paradoxes of referentiality in life writing, this book examines the autobiographies of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Ngugi wa Thiong'o, Wangari Maathai, and Bethwell Ogot. The analysis dwells on self-representations in correlation with imaginations of the 'Kenyan nation' in these works. Thus, the study gives a critical account into the modern memoir: the forms and styles it takes, the ways in which these authors tend to understand and present their lives.
