Book Description
Excerpt from Methods of Attracting Birds The importance of attracting birds around our homes was first impressed upon the author through his experience with children in connection with the work in nature-study in the public schools. This was encouraged chiefly from the child's standpoint, on account of the educative value of this kind of work on the child. Furthermore, from the standpoint of the birds, this means of encouraging and protecting them is a very efficient one, which may be applied by all birdlovers, adults as well as children. Hence this book has been written from two view-points, that of birds and that of human beings; for the protection of the former and the pleasure of the latter. The author has not attempted to restrict himself to his own experiences, but has drawn freely upon the experiences of any who could be reached. And, indeed, the chief value of these pages lies in the fact that they represent the results of so many observers, giving a brief summary of the work that is being done throughout the country. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Attract and Protect Wild Birds The following pages form an admirable treatise, not only on bird protection, but more than that, on bird preservation. Game birds have long been carefully preserved by means of a close season, by the destruction of their enemies, the provision of plantations and coverts for nesting and shelter, and by feeding. The Baron von Berlepsch has applied the system of game preservation to all useful birds, and his methods, as recorded in this book, are convincing by reason of their very thoroughness. Book Description
Excerpt from Our Native Birds: How to Protect Them and Attract Them to Our Homes The special Bird Day matter, it is hoped, will be found useful in schools. I should be glad to hear from any one who may try to protect and attract birds by the methods and devices recommended, or who may have new methods and de vices to communicate. I hope that in the near future our State Agricultural Experiment Stations will pay more attention to the relation of birds to our homes and to farming and gardening, and to the study of the best means for protecting them. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Attract Wild Birds About the Home While the list of winter birds is small when compared to the number which arrive in the spring, this season is the best time to commence making one's ground attractive to them. The most timid become brave when hungry, visiting the neighborhood of houses in search of food. At such times they become wonderfully tame, often eating from one's hand. Our Winter Birds

Our Winter Birds PDF Author: Frank M. Chapman

Book Description
Excerpt from Our Winter Birds: How to Know and How to Attract Them Plates I and II contain all the commoner (and some of the rarer) winter land birds of the northeastern United States. They are arranged on shelves as if they were displayed in a museum case. In fact, the idea for illustrations grew from a seasonal collection of birds which many years ago the author placed on exhibition in the American Museum of Natural History. The figures are small, but so accurately has Mr. Sawyer drawn them that minute details of form and color are shown as effectively as though the birds were much larger. The great advantage of these figures over most bird illustrations is that all those in the same case are drawn to the same scale. (The scale in Plate II being slightly larger than in Plate I.) One can therefore gain a better idea of actual size from these drawings than is possible when the Crow and Kinglet, for example, are made of equal size. Furthermore, this plan permits of the direct comparison of one species with another, while a glance at the two plates gives one a comprehensive conception of our winter bird-life. Birds Worth Knowing

Birds Worth Knowing PDF Author:

Book Description
Excerpt from Birds Worth Knowing: Bird Neighbors, Birds That Hunt and Are Hunted (Game Birds), How to Attract the Birds, Birds Every Child Know If all his lessons were as joyful as learning to know the birds in the fields and woods, there would be no " ... whining Schoole-boy with his Satchell And shining morning face creeping like Snaile Unwillingly to schoole." Long before his nine o'clock headache appears, lessons have begun. Nature herself is the teacher who rouses him from his bed with an outburst of song under the window and sets his sleepy brain to wondering whether it was a robins clear, ringing call that startled him from his dreams, or the chipping sparrow's wiry tremulo, or the gushing little wrens tripping cadenza. Interest in the birds trains the ear quite unconsciously. A keen, intelligent listener is rare, even among grown-ups, but a child who is becoming acquainted with the birds about him hears every sound and puzzles out its meaning with a cleverness that amazes those with ears who hear not. He responds to the first alarm note from the nesting blue birds in the orchard and dashes out of the house to chase away a prowling cat.
