The term "commercial fundraiser" (CF) refers generally to a person or corp. that is a for-profit business who contracts with charities, for compensation, to raise money in the charity's name. The CF usually makes a profit by charging the charity a flat fee or a percentage of the contributions collected in the charity's name. Historically, only about 1/3 of the total dollars collected by commercial fundraisers in Calif. actually went to charities. This report shows the results of solicitation by commercial fundraisers in 1997. Most of the 85,000 charities registered with the AG do not use CFR to raise funds. The information in this summary is taken unedited from reports filed by the charities and CFR themselves. They had to be signed by the CFR and also by officers of the charities for whom the solicitations were made.
