Ohio Band Directors' Perceptions of Large Group Adjudicated Events

Ohio Band Directors' Perceptions of Large Group Adjudicated Events PDF Author: Kenneth Lloyd Hoffman Jr.

Book Description
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of Ohio band directors towards concert band Large Group Adjudicated Events (LGAE). Special focus was given to factors with the potential to influence directors' perceptions of LGAE, such as years of teaching experience, level of teaching assignment (i.e., middle vs. high school), size of band program, and teaching setting (i.e., rural, suburban, rural). Participants responded to a researcher developed survey instrument, including Likert and opened ended items, centering on the following themes: fairness and accuracy of LGAE evaluation, influence of outside agencies or stakeholders on decisions to participate in LGAE, benefits of LGAE to self and students, LGAE impact on curriculum, student growth and professional development as a result of LGAE participation, and LGAE as a requirement for career advancement. Findings showed that, although respondents agreed that LGAE is a fair and accurate assessment of concert band performance, they also agreed that LGAE is in need of improvement. Moreover, ANOVA analyses for the variables of teaching experience and school setting revealed significant differences of opinion about LGAE. Specifically, urban teachers rated several items significantly lower than their rural and suburban counterparts, indicating that LGAE does not resonate with them or their students. Likewise, mid-career teachers also viewed some aspects of LGAE less favorably than experienced and novice teachers, noting feelings that the event may not be accurately judged. Implications for LGAE in Ohio are discussed.

Attitudes of High School Band Directors in the United States Toward Solo and Ensemble Activities

Attitudes of High School Band Directors in the United States Toward Solo and Ensemble Activities PDF Author: Brian D. Meyers

Book Description
The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of high band directors in the United States toward solo and ensemble activities. Independent variables such as teaching experience, level of education, MENC region in which directors taught, personal solo and ensemble activity experience, teaching assignment, and director-centered external factors (supplemental contracts, teaching evaluations, program awards) were used to investigate potential differences in attitudinal responses. Subjects were high school band directors (N = 557) chosen through a stratified random sample by state. Participation in the study included completing an online researcher-designed questionnaire that gathered demographic information as well as information regarding directors' attitudes towards benefits from student participation in solo and ensemble activities, the importance of such activities to directors, and attitudes towards student participation in local, regional, and state solo and ensemble festivals and contests. One-way analyses of variance and two-way multivariate analyses of variance were conducted to investigate potential differences in responses according to various independent variables. Significant differences were found in responses to statements of the importance of solo and ensemble to directors and of solo and ensemble festivals and contests according to region, solo and ensemble experience, and director-centered external factors. No significant differences were found for statements of director's attitudes toward benefits of student participation in solo and ensemble activities according to any independent variables. Results indicate that directors understand and believe strongly in the benefits of solo and ensemble activities to students, but factors such as time, job demands, band program expectations, and festival and contest adjudication, format, and timing may hinder directors' inclusion of solo and ensemble activities as an integral part of their program. Further research is suggested to investigate directors' attitudes within individual states as well as ways to integrate solo and ensemble activities into daily band rehearsals.

Determining Criteria for the Evaluation of High School Band Directors PDF Author: Marc Samir Parulekar

Book Description
The purposes of this study were to: (a) identify teacher attributes, student learning objectives and program outcomes that high school principals and high school band directors believe to be indicators of effective teaching; (b) compare beliefs of band directors to beliefs of principals on each indicator of effective teaching; and (c) to compare beliefs of respondents on each indicator of effective teaching based on the respondents' school settings (i.e., rural, urban and suburban). Using survey methodology, a random stratified sample of Ohio principals (n = 340) and band directors (n = 340) were asked to complete a 73-item Band Director Evaluation Questionnaire. Overall survey response rate was 68.7% (N = 467). Findings indicated that principals and band directors believed that 41% of band director evaluation should be based on individual student achievement, 36% on teacher attributes and 23% on program outcomes. Both band directors and principals believed that effective communication, high expectations, student achievement on music reading, and student achievement on performing music with appropriate style are indicators of director effectiveness. Overall, principals had a more positive view of survey items as indicators of band director effectiveness. Band directors did not believe adjudicated events were appropriate indicators of effectiveness. School setting did not impact the beliefs of respondents.
