He Slew the Dreamer

He Slew the Dreamer PDF Author: William Bradford Huie
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1496820649
Category : History

Pages : 222

Book Description
Author William Bradford Huie was one of the most celebrated figures of twentieth-century journalism. A pioneer of "checkbook journalism," he sought the truth in controversial stories when the truth was hard to come by. In the case of James Earl Ray, Huie paid Ray and his original attorneys $40,000 for cooperation in explaining his movements in the months before Martin Luther King’s assassination and up to Ray’s arrest weeks later in London. Huie became a major figure in the investigation of King’s assassination and was one of the few persons able to communicate with Ray during that time. Huie, a friend of King, writes that he went into his investigation of Ray believing that a conspiracy was behind King’s murder. But after retracing Ray’s movements through California, Louisiana, Mexico, Canada, Atlanta, Birmingham, Memphis, and London, Huie came to believe that James Earl Ray was a pathetic petty criminal who hated African Americans and sought to make a name for himself by murdering King. He Slew the Dreamer was originally published in 1970 soon after Ray went to prison and was republished in 1977, but was out of print until the 1997 edition, published with the cooperation of Huie’s widow. This new edition features an essay by scholar Riché Richardson that provides fresh insight, and it includes the 1977 prologue, which Huie wrote countering charges by members of Congress, the King family, and others who claimed the FBI had aided and abetted Ray. In 1970, 1977, 1997, and now, He Slew the Dreamer offers a remarkably detailed examination of the available evidence at the time the murder occurred and an invaluable resource to current debates over the King assassination.

The Battle for Andalon is on and all Hands are on Deck!” ”In this dystopian vision, author T.B.Phillips has created a page-turner. The writing style is cinematic, the pace is good, and the characters are captivating. I especially like the female heroines, who are feisty warriors. There is plenty of contrast in the depiction of characters and they feel real because of their human flaws. The epic sea-battles are especially convincing, since the author draws on a world he knows well. The best thing about this book is the detailed world-building. There is a sense of mystery and a world beyond the book, a magical or spiritual dimension which is explored by the emotants and their animal familiars. Co-existing with this idea of magic and prophecy, is the reality of political machinations and a brutish world where duplicity reigns. The book is thought-provoking." - Suzy Davies, ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑ "Sometimes you read a book and realize you're reading art. This book does that." "I was absolutely blown away by the rich descriptions and well-formed action sequences. This book is a clinic in writing artistry. It was outstanding in every regard. If there was an option for a sixth star, this book should get it. This book was turned up to 11 all the way to the end. Nice Work." - ZombieTex, ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑ "A fantastic tale with pirates, sword fights, magic, love, betrayal, secrets and more!" "TB Phillips is becoming a master-craftsman weaving a beautiful tapestry of characters, adventure and wonder. The imagery of the battles at sea, the Pescari people, and even the evil that lurks behind the book cover is magnificently written. You will latch onto each character and hope your beloved favorites survive to the end of the series. Phillips has a vivid imagination that compels the reader to turn the pages faster and faster until they finish with a desire to read more." - Maria Thompson, ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑

Book Description
The chef's knife was in the wrong place... wedged deep in the gut of celebrity chef Carlos Cruz. With her bloody discovery, Mercy could lose it all. And not just for her, her entire family is at risk too. San Francisco's hottest young chef rose from modest beginnings to getting a James Beard Award for his upscale Mission District eatery, El Conquistador. In addition to creating cutting-edge cuisine, the mercurial Cruz has been accused of sexual harassment multiple times. Smart, ambitious, and tenacious, Mercedes "Mercy" Tejada was granted Dreamer status while studying to become a nurse. The waitress job wasn't the ideal, but the tips paid the bills. When she finds Cruz dying in the alley behind his trendy bistro, she knows she's in a lot of trouble. Mercy's fingerprints and blood-splattered sweatshirt make her a prime suspect. It doesn't help that she and Cruz were seen fighting and Mercy threatened him. In THE DREAMER, the eleventh installment of New York Times bestselling author Sheldon Siegel's iconic San Francisco series, ex-spouses and Public Defenders Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez are thrust into the middle of this politically charged case and tasked with finding the truth. The case is personal for them too. Mercy's mom, Perlita, is the longtime housekeeper for Rosie's mother, Sylvia. It is Sylvia who asks Rosie and Mike to handle Mercy's case. There are political ramifications as well. Rosie is running for re-election as Public Defender. Her decision to handle a dreamer's defense herself will not play well to a portion of the electorate. As Mercy's case hurtles toward trial, Rosie, Mike, and Mike's brother/private investigator, Pete, race between the tenements, trendy restaurants, and century-old churches of the Mission District in a desperate search for an elusive truth where everybody--including Mike and Rosie and their families--has something to hide. An intricate plot, likeable characters, powerful suspense, and a touch of humor are Sheldon Siegel's hallmarks. In THE DREAMER, readers will discover once again why Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez have been called two of the most compelling characters in contemporary crime fiction.
