Book Description
One of the goals of the research was to establish the relative importance of the condition of the atmosphere to the condition of the surface (soil) in the production of high PM concentrations on either side of Nogales. [...] Lastly, in an attempt to differentiate the relative importance of the conditions of the atmosphere and the surface to PM concentrations on one side of Nogales relative to the other, differences between PM concentrations at the two stations were matched with the composite representations for the atmosphere and surface. [...] The height increases are in the vicinity of a ridging in the typical pattern of 500 hPa over the western United States, and are accompanied by large height decreases in the eastern Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of the eastern portion of typical troughing in the height pattern. [...] The spirit of this work was to determine the broader controllers of PM10 concentrations, particularly the importance of the atmospheric condition versus the condition of the surface. [...] Also of interest to policy and decision-makers and the community of Nogales is the fact that PM10 concentrations show somewhat of a pattern by day of the week, whereby the highest values tend to occur on the shoulders of weekends: Friday and Sunday on the Arizona side, and Thursday and Sunday on the Sonora side.
