La Humanidad tiene en su diversidad lingüística uno de sus mayores caudales. La multiplicación de lenguas es una fuente, insustituible, de belleza y conocimiento. El estudio de los sistemas lingüísticos a través de la Historia nos habla de la evolución de la especie humana, de su capacidad de adaptación al entorno y de sus formas de organización social y económica. En nuestros días, la creciente interconexión de las distintas regiones del planeta –la llamada globalización– hace que el mundo parezca más homogéneo. Las necesidades del comercio –en su sentido más amplio– nos empujan a aprender un pequeño número de grandes lenguas de comunicación: más gente habla menos idiomas, facilitando así el entendimiento entre los pueblos. Y mientras unas lenguas dejan de hablarse, otras cambian, se mezclan entre sí, surgen nuevas variantes y lenguajes específi cos. Los nuevos medios de comunicación difunden las grandes lenguas internacionales, pero también permiten conservar y dar a conocer lenguas y culturas que de otra forma permanecerían limitadas a círculos minoritarios. Como toda lengua viva, el español no es inmutable ni forma un bloque uniforme. Al igual que otros idiomas que se han extendido por países y regiones diferentes, más allá de su lugar de origen, contiene en sí mismo una gran diversidad. Hoy en día, después de una larga expansión, el español está entre las cuatro lenguas más habladas del planeta, y en él se expresa uno de los conjuntos culturales más creativos y dinámicos del mundo. El Atlas de la lengua española en el mundo desea presentar de un modo claro y directo la posición de la lengua española dentro de la riqueza y diversidad del universo de las lenguas. Recurre para ello, junto a textos breves y concisos, a la efi cacia informativa de la imagen: mapas, cuadros y fi guras que refl ejan la distribución geográfi ca y las principales tendencias sociales y económicas de la comunidad de habla hispana. El Atlas de la lengua española constituye el segundo volumen de la serie de estudios que publica la Fundación Telefónica dentro del proyecto de investigación Valor económico del español: una empresa multinacional, dirigido por los profesores José Luis García Delgado, José Antonio Alonso y Juan Carlos Jiménez.
