Book Description

Book Description
Paris, Antwerp, Zwolle, and Bremen--the Atelier Kempe Thill works in these cities on the building typology of the urban villa, which today essentially characterizes housing in Western Europe as a vision of contemporary living. The projects presented in this publication are all based on this basic type of structure. However, very distinct interpretations develop from specific national and regional features and their conscious conceptualization. The volume traces the projects by the Ateliers Kempe Thill in their relationship of tension between architectural design and lifeworld-related conditions. Numerous illustrations as well as texts by well-known architects and critics shed light on the buildings and their processes of origin. The catalogue thus provides a panorama of the conditions under which collective housing is currently developing in Europe.

In Detail, Small Structures

In Detail, Small Structures PDF Author: Christian Schittich
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3034615183
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 178

Book Description
Shelters, kiosks, snack bars, market stalls, bus stops, telephone booths, toilets, advertising columns, ticket booths, mobile tents or housing units, emergency shelters, tourist information booths—this list of small, autonomously functioning buildings could be expanded almost infinitely. Small buildings shape our daily lives; they are found at the nearest street corner; they are present and indispensable, but as architecture they attract our attention only rarely. Yet these small structures occupy a definite place in the infrastructure of the city. Rather than focusing on the large attractions of architecture, architects find many potential ways to ensure the quality of everyday design hidden in these small, sometimes charming necessities. This volume in the DETAIL series spans the arc between architecture and product design, since not infrequently small buildings are located precisely in the area of tension between these two professions, and their successful realization is evident in the details of their construction.

The Deck Access Housing Design Guide

The Deck Access Housing Design Guide PDF Author: Andrew Beharrell
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000835006
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 349

Book Description
The Deck Access Housing Design Guide is the first practical design guide to deck access housing. It focuses on the contemporary use of deck access housing, sharing practical guidance and providing in-depth case studies, while also presenting historical context about this flexible and evolving housing type. Despite a chequered history that saw it linked with urban decay and social malaise in the 1970s and 80s, deck access housing today, after a 40-year hiatus, is fast becoming the default solution for mid-rise housing in the UK, and London in particular. This is in part down to architects’ renewed interest in post-war Modernist typologies, but also due to specific planning standards that favour the qualities – dual-aspect plans, ‘public’ front doors – of deck access design. This comprehensive, professional guide spotlights the best contemporary deck access housing in the UK and throughout mainland Europe, explaining and analysing exemplars in detail. Illustrated in full colour throughout with plans, elevations, photographs, project data and annotations, case studies include both new build and retrofit projects, in public housing, co-housing and Third Age residential projects. Good architectural practice flows from an informed understanding of cultural and design history coupled with practical guidance and clear analysis of case studies. That is what this book provides for anyone interested in, or involved in the design and delivery of, deck access housing. Featured architects from the UK: AHMM · Apparata · Cartwright Pickard · Collective Architecture · DO Architecture · Hawkins Brown · Haworth Tompkins · Henley Halebrown · Levitt Bernstein · Maccreanor Lavington · Mæ · Matthew Lloyd · Pitman Tozer · Pollard Thomas Edwards · Proctor & Matthews · PRP · RCKa Featured architects from mainland Europe: ANMA · Arquitectura Produccions · Atelier Kempe Thill · Bureau Massa · DAMAST · Estudio Herreros · Fink + Jocher · KAAN · LEVS · Martin-Löf · MEF · Muñoz Miranda · Passelac & Roques · Waechter + Waechter

An Architect's Guide to Public Procurement

An Architect's Guide to Public Procurement PDF Author: Fin Garvey
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000701662
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 156

Book Description
There is suspicion in the UK and across Europe that the upcoming introduction of new European Directives will encourage a regime of conservatism and legal risk aversion, fostering the delivery of mediocre and banal building design. This book dispels these myths and instead looks at the genuine impact of EU law on architectural practice. Engaging in public sector work requires a broad understanding of this seemingly complex and constantly evolving subject, and unlike other texts, the book is designed to explore public procurement from the perspective of the architect. An easy to follow guide through the complex legal and technical jargon involved in the procurement process, the book provides practical tools which will assist architects in developing their own, clear procurement strategy. Although written with a UK audience in mind, the advice will also be applicable to other European jurisdictions. It is invaluable reading for existing practitioners wishing to expand their current involvement in the public procurement process, as well as those encountering it for the first time.

Deciding about Design Quality

Deciding about Design Quality PDF Author: Leentje Volker
Publisher: Sidestone Press
ISBN: 9088900531
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
In the past few years the image of tender procedures in which Dutch public clients selected an architect has been dominated by distressing newspaper headlines. Architects fear that the current tender culture will harm the quality of our built environment due to a potential lack of diversity, creativity and innovation in architectural design. Due to potential risks clients often allow legal requirements to overrule their actual wishes. This PhD research addresses the origin of the problems as currently experienced by public commissioning clients in architect selection and proposes pragmatic implications for future practice. It is therefore of interest for commissioning clients, management consultants, policy makers and legal advisors but also for designers and researchers in the field of architecture and decision making.

Flat Roof Construction Manual

Flat Roof Construction Manual PDF Author: Klaus Sedlbauer

ISBN: 3034615655
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 210

Book Description
