Defending Planet Earth

Defending Planet Earth PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309149681
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 152

Book Description
The United States spends approximately $4 million each year searching for near-Earth objects (NEOs). The objective is to detect those that may collide with Earth. The majority of this funding supports the operation of several observatories that scan the sky searching for NEOs. This, however, is insufficient in detecting the majority of NEOs that may present a tangible threat to humanity. A significantly smaller amount of funding supports ways to protect the Earth from such a potential collision or "mitigation." In 2005, a Congressional mandate called for NASA to detect 90 percent of NEOs with diameters of 140 meters of greater by 2020. Defending Planet Earth: Near-Earth Object Surveys and Hazard Mitigation Strategies identifies the need for detection of objects as small as 30 to 50 meters as these can be highly destructive. The book explores four main types of mitigation including civil defense, "slow push" or "pull" methods, kinetic impactors and nuclear explosions. It also asserts that responding effectively to hazards posed by NEOs requires national and international cooperation. Defending Planet Earth: Near-Earth Object Surveys and Hazard Mitigation Strategies is a useful guide for scientists, astronomers, policy makers and engineers.

Book Description
The NASA Dart Mission 2022: NASA Attempts to Alter Asteroid's Trajectory in Planetary Defense Test. The goal of NASA's Dart mission is to assess how challenging it would be to prevent a sizable space rock from colliding with Earth. On a target dubbed Dimorphos, the demonstration is occurring some 11 million kilometers (7 million miles) distant. According to the agency, neither the test nor the rock's current trajectory puts it on a course to strike the Earth. The impact is scheduled for Monday at 23:14 GMT (00:14 BST, Tuesday). The new James Webb super space observatory will be one of the telescopes keeping an eye on things from a distance. Everyone is aware of the Hollywood approach, which involves fearless astronauts and nuclear weapons. But how exactly can Earth be safeguarded against a deadly asteroid? NASA will soon find out. Super Volcanoes: What They Reveal about Earth and the Worlds Beyond

Super Volcanoes: What They Reveal about Earth and the Worlds Beyond PDF Author: Robin George Andrews
Publisher: W. W. Norton & Company
ISBN: 0393542076
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
An exhilarating, time-traveling journey to the solar system’s strangest and most awe-inspiring volcanoes. Volcanoes are capable of acts of pyrotechnical prowess verging on magic: they spout black magma more fluid than water, create shimmering cities of glass at the bottom of the ocean and frozen lakes of lava on the moon, and can even tip entire planets over. Between lava that melts and re-forms the landscape, and noxious volcanic gases that poison the atmosphere, volcanoes have threatened life on Earth countless times in our planet’s history. Yet despite their reputation for destruction, volcanoes are inseparable from the creation of our planet. A lively and utterly fascinating guide to these geologic wonders, Super Volcanoes revels in the incomparable power of volcanic eruptions past and present, Earthbound and otherwise—and recounts the daring and sometimes death-defying careers of the scientists who study them. Science journalist and volcanologist Robin George Andrews explores how these eruptions reveal secrets about the worlds to which they belong, describing the stunning ways in which volcanoes can sculpt the sea, land, and sky, and even influence the machinery that makes or breaks the existence of life. Walking us through the mechanics of some of the most infamous eruptions on Earth, Andrews outlines what we know about how volcanoes form, erupt, and evolve, as well as what scientists are still trying to puzzle out. How can we better predict when a deadly eruption will occur—and protect communities in the danger zone? Is Earth’s system of plate tectonics, unique in the solar system, the best way to forge a planet that supports life? And if life can survive and even thrive in Earth’s extreme volcanic environments—superhot, superacidic, and supersaline surroundings previously thought to be completely inhospitable—where else in the universe might we find it? Traveling from Hawai‘i, Yellowstone, Tanzania, and the ocean floor to the moon, Venus, and Mars, Andrews illuminates the cutting-edge discoveries and lingering scientific mysteries surrounding these phenomenal forces of nature.

Book Description
Nasa boss Bill Nelson said the mission would "show us how one day to shield our planet from an approaching space rock. We are showing that planetary guard is a worldwide undertaking and saving our planet is entirely conceivable." Mission supervisors at Johns Hopkins College's applied physical science lab say it very well may be as long as two months before telescope perceptions will show whether the effect had adequate power to modify the direction of the space rock Dimorphous, 6.8m miles from Earth. However, the initial segment of the mission was fruitful, Dart's accident arrival 17 meters from its expected objective on the space rock the width of a football arena sufficiently close to considering "fundamentally a bullseye", as per representative program supervisor Elena Adams. Ralph Semmel, head of the Johns Hopkins applied material science research center, hailed the "game-evolving" nature of the mission, adding that his group realized they had been fruitful when the video passed out. "Ordinarily, losing a signal from a space apparatus is an extremely terrible thing. However, for this situation, it was the best result," he said. Asteroids

Asteroids PDF Author: Martin Elvis
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300258380
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
A unique, wide-ranging examination of asteroid exploration and our future in space Human travel into space is an enormously expensive and unforgiving endeavor. So why go? In this accessible and authoritative book, astrophysicist Martin Elvis argues that the answer is asteroid exploration, for the strong motives of love, fear, and greed. Elvis’s personal motivation is one of scientific love—asteroid investigations may teach us about the composition of the solar system and the origins of life. A more compelling reason may be fear—of a dinosaur killer–sized asteroid hitting our planet. Finally, Elvis maintains, we should consider greed: asteroids likely hold vast riches, such as large platinum deposits, and mining them could provide both a new industry and a funding source for bolder space exploration. Elvis explains how each motive can be satisfied, and how they help one another. From the origins of life, to “space billiards,” and space sports, Elvis looks at how asteroids may be used in the not-so-distant future.
