Digital Spectral Analysis
Author: S. Lawrence Marple, Jr.
Publisher: Courier Dover Publications
ISBN: 048678052X
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 435
Book Description
Digital Spectral Analysis offers a broad perspective of spectral estimation techniques and their implementation. Coverage includes spectral estimation of discrete-time or discrete-space sequences derived by sampling continuous-time or continuous-space signals. The treatment emphasizes the behavior of each spectral estimator for short data records and provides over 40 techniques described and available as implemented MATLAB functions. In addition to summarizing classical spectral estimation, this text provides theoretical background and review material in linear systems, Fourier transforms, matrix algebra, random processes, and statistics. Topics include Prony's method, parametric methods, the minimum variance method, eigenanalysis-based estimators, multichannel methods, and two-dimensional methods. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students of electrical engineering — and for scientific use in the signal processing application community outside of universities — the treatment's prerequisites include some knowledge of discrete-time linear system and transform theory, introductory probability and statistics, and linear algebra. 1987 edition.

Time and Frequency Representation of Signals and Systems
Author: G. Longo
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3709126207
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
The concept of time and frequency representation of signals dates back to the first notation for music. From a mathematical viewpoint we can associate the time function to its Fourier transform. This book introduces a useful representation of signals simultaneously in time and frequency.

Fourier Techniques and Applications
Author: John F. Price
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461325250
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
The first systematic methods of Fourier analysis date from the early eighteenth century with the work of Joseph Fourier on the problem of the flow of heat. (A brief history is contained in the first paper.) Given the initial tempera ture at all points of a region, the problem was to determine the changes in the temperature distribution over time. Understanding and predicting these changes was important in such areas as the handling of metals and the determination of geological and atmospheric temperatures. Briefly, Fourier noticed that the solution of the heat diffusion problem was simple if the initial temperature dis tribution was sinusoidal. He then asserted that any distri bution can be decomposed into a sum of sinusoids, these being the harmonics of the original function. This meant that the general solution could now be obtained by summing the solu tions of the component sinusoidal problems. This remarkable ability of the series of sinusoids to describe all "reasonable" functions, the sine qua non of Fourier analysis and synthesis, has led to the routine use of the methods originating with Fourier in a great diversity of areas - astrophysics, computing, economics, electrical engineering, geophysics, information theory, medical engineering, optics, petroleum and mineral exploration, quan tum physics and spectroscopy, to name a few.

Cyclostationary Processes and Time Series
Author: Antonio Napolitano
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0081027370
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 628
Book Description
Many processes in nature arise from the interaction of periodic phenomena with random phenomena. The results are processes that are not periodic, but whose statistical functions are periodic functions of time. These processes are called cyclostationary and are an appropriate mathematical model for signals encountered in many fields including communications, radar, sonar, telemetry, acoustics, mechanics, econometrics, astronomy, and biology. Cyclostationary Processes and Time Series: Theory, Applications, and Generalizations addresses these issues and includes the following key features. - Presents the foundations and developments of the second- and higher-order theory of cyclostationary signals - Performs signal analysis using both the classical stochastic process approach and the functional approach for time series - Provides applications in signal detection and estimation, filtering, parameter estimation, source location, modulation format classification, and biological signal characterization - Includes algorithms for cyclic spectral analysis along with Matlab/Octave code - Provides generalizations of the classical cyclostationary model in order to account for relative motion between transmitter and receiver and describe irregular statistical cyclicity in the data

Acoustic Signal Processing for Ocean Exploration
Author: J.M.F Moura
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401116040
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 671
Book Description
Acoustic Signal Processing for Ocean Explortion has two major goals: (i) to present signal processing algorithms that take into account the models of acoustic propagation in the ocean and; (ii) to give a perspective of the broad set of techniques, problems, and applications arising in ocean exploration. The book discusses related issues and problems focused in model based acoustic signal processing methods. Besides addressing the problem of the propagation of acoustics in the ocean, it presents relevant acoustic signal processing methods like matched field processing, array processing, and localization and detection techniques. These more traditional contexts are herein enlarged to include imaging and mapping, and new signal representation models like time/frequency and wavelet transforms. Several applied aspects of these topics, such as the application of acoustics to fisheries, sea floor swath mapping by swath bathymetry and side scan sonar, autonomous underwater vehicles and communications in underwater are also considered.

Maximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Inverse Problems
Author: C.R. Smith
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401722218
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 493
Book Description
This volume contains the text of the twenty-five papers presented at two workshops entitled Maximum-Entropy and Bayesian Methods in Applied Statistics, which were held at the University of Wyoming from June 8 to 10, 1981, and from August 9 to 11, 1982. The workshops were organized to bring together researchers from different fields to critically examine maxi mum-entropy and Bayesian methods in science, engineering, medicine, oceanography, economics, and other disciplines. An effort was made to maintain an informal environment where ideas could be easily ~xchanged. That the workshops were at least partially successful is borne out by the fact that there have been two succeeding workshops, and the upcoming Fifth Workshop promises to be the largest of all. These workshops and their proceedings could not have been brought to their final form without the substantial help of a number of people. The support of David Hofmann, the past chairman, and Glen Rebka, Jr. , the present chairman of the Physics Department of the University of Wyoming, has been strong and essential. Glen has taken a special interest in seeing that the proceedings have received the support required for their comple tion. The financial support of the Office of University Research Funds, University of Wyoming, is gratefully acknowledged. The secretarial staff, in particular Evelyn Haskell, Janice Gasaway, and Marce Mitchum, of the University of Wyoming Physics Department has contributed a great number of hours in helping C. Ray Smith organize and direct the workshops.
