There is a lack of research and literature on whether being a member of Greek life as an undergraduate student in a college or university setting is associated with differential well-being. During emerging adulthood, a time of considerable change and challenge, like attending a higher education institution, an individual can benefit from joining an organization or group in benefit of their social well-being. Greek-lettered organizations play a significant role in an individual's life on and off campus through relationships, engagement, and campus life, however, there are mixed research results regarding the positive or negative outcomes associated with Greek membership. The current study uses data from the Penn State COllege Relationships and Experiences (CORE II) project to understand whether Greek life membership is associated with undergraduate student social well-being at the University Park campus. Correlations and descriptive statistics were run to better understand associations between Greek life membership and social well-being factors like sense of belonging and social connectedness. A linear regression was run to determine the association between Greek life membership and social well-being factors accounting for gender. Within the Greek life sample, a t-test was run to determine if social well-being differed between men and women and by a function of living situation. Also, within Greek life sample, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was conducted to determine if social well-being differed by year in school. African American college students face a myriad of unique race related stressors on campus, yet there is a gap of knowledge on how these experiences may impact overall health as well as what may mediate these effects. The goal of the current study was threefold. First, it was to better understand the relationship between health outcomes and the experience of discrimination on college campuses for African American students. Second, it further investigated the research of Pieterse & Carter (2007), to explore if perceived discrimination influences health outcomes above and beyond general life stress in the emerging adult population. Lastly, it explored potential protective factors by examining if the relationship between health outcomes and the experience of discrimination is mediated by socio-cultural group involvement in the form of fraternities and sororities. 133 African American college students from a south eastern predominantly White university completed the American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment to explore these research aims. Racial discrimination was positively correlated with negative health outcomes, however experience of discrimination did not influence health outcomes above and beyond general life stress. Additionally, belonging to a fraternity or sorority did not mediate the relationship between the experience of discrimination and negative health outcomes. The results suggest that the discrimination African American college students face on predominantly white campuses are harmful to overall health, yet more needs to be explored to find adequate interventions to these negative health outcomes.

Findings revealed an unexpected amount of scholarly research interest on fraternity and sorority involvement, and membership correlates in the last two decades from a variety of disciplines. Despite a disproportionate focus on behavioral correlates, such as alcohol use, hazing and sexual assault, researchers in the past decade have slowly added psychosocial and educational considerations, building toward a more holistic understanding of outcomes related to involvement.

This paper examines the relationship between membership in social fraternities and sororities and binge drinking among 18-24 year old full-time four-year college students who participated in the 1995 National College Health Risk Behavior Survey. To deal with unobserved heterogeneity in binge drinking incidence and frequency regressions, I enter as explanatory variables various measures of situational and overall alcohol use. When these are added, the fraternity membership coefficient is substantially reduced in size, but remains large and highly significant. This suggests that fraternity membership increases binge drinking. If not, it identifies a very specific mechanism underlying the decision to join a fraternity: members drink more intensely than non-members even while doing so in similar frequencies and situations and for similar lengths of time. Particularly notable is that behavior by underage students appears to drive the relationship.
